Unitiqutes wont play music from Synology NAS

Posted by: Greensleeves on 19 August 2015

I have both a Unitiqute and a Unitiqute 2 in separate rooms linked to a Synology DS215J, one hard wired and one wireless.  The system has run perfectly for several months (except for the dreaded NAS firmware 5.2-5565 update, which was solved by Phil Harris); NAS is currently on firmware 5.2-5592 Update 2.

The NAS is left on permanently, though I do use hibernation mode.  Due to absence from home the system has not been used for six days.  I have just returned and tried to access my music using the Naim app and Synology UPnP server as usual, but although individual albums show on the screen I cannot play them because the play button is not there, only the pause button.  Using the Naim remote, it goes through UPnP to albums, says 'connecting' but does not do so.  Neither can I get internet radio, though I can receive radio via my aerial connections. Both Unitiqutes react in the same way in all instances.

If anybody can help I should be very grateful - I am suffering withdrawal symptoms!

Reboot everything & while yr at it re-install the app

1st turn it all off, including the wireless router

Restart the router & wait until its completed its start process

Restart the NAS & wait until its all fired up & all the lights are on & correct colours.

Then restart the UQ's,  one at a  time

Make sure each finds the network (UPnP - NAS)

.........  thats it & it should be OK

Sometimes the Synology Media Server just hangs. You can restart it from the Package Center: select Media Server, choose Action: Stop, and when that completes, Action: Run.

Thank you, Mike-B and Fernando, I am back in the land of the living and I am very grateful!

Fernando, I did not see your reply until after I went the reboot road, which worked, but I will bear in mind your tip if this should happen again.

Of course, it begs the question what caused the problem: a firmware update, lack of use for several days, just one of those things, something else.  For the moment I am glad to be re-connected, but I have the NAS set to auto update firmware - is this a good idea do you think?

Fernando's tip about MS hanging might have been the cause of the problem.  However I find the do-it-all reboot will not only fix it if it was hanging, but also fix whatever else it could have been & at the same time re-introduces all the bits to each other again.

Yes its a good idea to set for auto-update,  but this is a bit misleading as it does not auto-update,  it tells you when an update is ready & waiting, & if you set up to e-mail you it will send an e-mail.  But it does need you to download & install & confirm the NAS is switched on & that it will remain on until completed.

There is a new update released this morning - DSM 5.2-5592 Update 3

Thank you, Mike-B, grateful for the reassurance.

I've been very busy myself so I just saw this. My guess is that Media Server just gets wedged from time to time because of some bug. It used to happen more frequently than it does now. I don't think the problem is on the Naim side, as I've seen it also with a BubbleUPnP (Android app) controlling a SOtM sMS-100 renderer to a Schiit Bifrost Uber DAC (my home office headphone setup). When this happens, I grab my Macbook Air that is always logged into the NAS, and restart Media Server.
