Qobuz Shrinking?

Posted by: endlessnessism on 23 August 2015

Is it just me or is Qobuz shrinking?  Fewer new releases and things saved as favourites suddenly no longer available?

Any examples? Can cross check on other services. Distributors may have withdrawn streaming support for certain tracks...

Worth doing a new search by artist if something has become unavailable in a playlist.  I can think of only one example in my experience that has disappeared completely, but I have noted that tracks in playlists sometimes become unavailable, yet the album is still there and you can re-add them.  It seems that sometimes the albums get removed and replaced with a newer release or master.

Not observed it, while I noticed that Qobuz sometimes categorizes music in an odd manner.

I noticed it a few weeks ago with several albums. At the moment I can recall only 2 examples:

1) Sun Trio - Dreams Are True

2) Jamie Saft - The New Standard

Both are avaliable on Spotify

It's worth keeping in mind that with most streaming services the catalog differs according to country, making direct comparisons tricky.

The Sun Trio / Dreams are True is available

Jamie Saft / The New Standard is not available

Unusually Wat, I totally agree with you!

And having just had to remove Spotify from my PC (due to some rather dubious code installation techniques they used), my connectivity for streaming has been reduced.  I can still use it on my tablet as there's no sensitive info on there, so I've not completely lost access.  But the principle remains that if you are streaming, you are vulnerable to the capricious whims of the company.

Huge are you saying you have removed Spotify and your system is worse?

No, I removed Spotify before any malware was able to take advantage of the vulnerability it created.

It was no better than before and no worse than before.

The loss of connectivity is just that I no longer have access to Spotify on my PC.

Sorry, my previous post was ambiguous.

I don't have a lot of hard evidence to support my feeling that Qobuz may be shrinking, or possibly not expanding quite so quickly.

I mostly listen to Jazz these days and I regularly investigate the New Releases tab.  When I first signed-up to Qobuz in about January 2014, I had the impression that there were half a dozen new Jazz releases every week or so and, with exceptions such as the ECM label that you can't stream from any platform, a lot of new releases that I read about in the press were quickly available in Qobuz.  These days they don't seem to appear in such numbers.

Often when I hear something new in Qobuz (a new release or something old that I haven't heard before) I save it to my Favourite Albums, where it might lay around for a while before I go back to it.  It's here that I have noticed things disappearing - they were there and I might have played them a few times but when I have gone back a few months later they were gone.  Whole albums, not just individual tracks.  I haven't made a complete list but two examples are John Taylor "Whirlpool" and George Duke "Liberated Fantasies".

Just checked and both of these are available on Deezer Elite and Beats here in Switzerland, implying they are still available for streaming.

The only things I have noticed that they sometimes have remarkable gaps in the catalogue. F.i they have a lot of the new remasters of Oscar Peterson, but not all.

Also just realized a lot of albums are late available, high res audio is always earlier....
