Broadband Speed

I have recently had occasions when my normal BB speed has dropped conciderably. It is normaly between 12 and 13mbps when measured on my iPad. This is fine for my needs. However a few days ago it dropped down to 1mbps. I decided to ring sky an ask for a reason why this was happening. They got me to log into the sky hub software to check the line access speed which was 14.5mbps. They concluded from this that one of the items connected to my network(there are eight items, TV SKY HD BOXES. NAS AND NDS etc.)was causing the problem. This seemed logical and decided to try and discover which item by a process of illimination The next time the problem occurred. However I have since then looked at the line access speed on the sky hub several times and it is always exactly the same 14.5mbps. This makes me suspicious of the information sky are giving me. Can anyone confirm whether the access line speed given in the sky hub is the actual speed entering the hub or just the maximum speed possible, which is what I suspect given that it never changes. Surely this would vary depending on the number of others using the line. If this is the case then my problem could be caused by outside influences. Thanks.

I you don't already have one, I would install a switch between NAS & NDS with a branch connection off the switch into the Sky hub.  This removes all the NAS-NDS traffic from the hub ports & whatever is the the problem with the hub,  it does not affect NAS-NDS replay & also does not add to the problem. The NDS will only take a stream from the hub for the iRadio.  NAS, NDS & iPad will talk to each other as normal.

Yea I think you are being played there. A switch in this context will make no difference its WAN use that sky are suggesting is the issue, i.e. if one of your devices was downloading something.

As you have surmised the sky test might be simply showing you, your connection speed, which will have little to do with  contention/network traffic for the area. I would push them on it.

Hi, yes the speed reported by the router hub is the ADSL link speed.. This is line speed of the connection between your router and the exchange, not the internet data rate speed. 1Mbps does sound a little extreme on the low side if there is not a fault, but if there is a severe back haul issue, or issue on your LAN, the reported internet speed given by speed apps will be less, or even significantly less than your line speed.

do you have any neighbours using Sky? Do they also have similar issues? If not it does point to more likely being your router hub or local LAN

You could also try another speed tester. The one I use is Speedtest (by Ookla). You can download it for free from the iTunes App Store and it tests ping, upload and download to one of many different servers which you can easily change to try another one.  This tests the whole link between the iPhone or whatever and the server out on the Internet. And it stores your results for you.

I completely agree about the idea connecting your Naim things via a switch, like the Netgear GS105, which is cheap and fit and forget.  Not only does it take your Naim traffic away from your router but it seems to reduce issues generally, eg the streamer seeing the NAS etc.

i hope this helps
