Your Best Sporting Day of the Year?

Posted by: velofellow on 29 August 2015

As a lad I looked forward to the FA Cup Final but my interest (along with that of many others) has waned to the point that I could not tell you the last five winners. I have never been interested in horses or tennis but my passion for cricket has been ever present despite the efforts of Notts and England to periodically blow me off course. Today is T20 Finals Day and I love every moment of it. I think that it may well be Bumble's favourite day too.

I have multiple favorites. For cycling the mountain courses, the races in Belgian at the beginning of the season, for soccer the key matches in the champions league, the world cup and the European cup, the Olympic gAmes both variants, world champioship ice skating......

The World Cup. I don't think any any other sporting event produces as much passion.

It is also just one more reason why I hope that the Russian/Ukrainian conflict is ended long before 2018.

For a brief moment I thought you were referring to this:

"The World Cup of Hockey will return in September 2016 in Toronto, Canada when eight teams, comprised of the world’s best hockey players, compete for a best-on-best international hockey championship."

(but then I read the second sentence)

Six Nations Rugby .. we probably had the best tournament in very many years this Spring .. hats off to Ireland for their win this year ..

I shall be fixated on the World Cup in a couple of weeks .. and rooting for the boyos in red ..

Carl Hagelin scoring in OT to put away the Pittsburgh Penguins in round 1 of the Stanley Cup playoffs.

 Hockey is the best sport!

Today.

We beat Liverpool at Anfield for the first time in 52 years.

As an added bonus, Chelski were beaten at home by Palace and Spuds could only scrape a draw.

Kevin, beware . Pride goes before a fall. We Pompey supporters know this only too well.

But then again, enjoy the moment.

Easy call for me - The College Football Playoff National Championship, my favorite sport. Throughout my lifetime, the means for determining a national champion in college football has had some level of ambiguity, whether lack of direct competition or reliance on dual polls. Still I've always looked forward to the biggest of the bowl games. With the current system, instituted last year, there's finally an ultimate game to watch with a definitive outcome. As a Buckeyes fan, I can't argue with the 2015 results.

The day my team from the north east  of England that wear black and white stripes beat another team from the north east of England that wear red and white stripes. Unfortunately it seems to have become a bit like waiting for a leap year to come around

I didn't know you played Premier League. Congrats on your victory. Did you score?

I did, but the ref disallowed it. Offside.

Indeed. It is but one victory.

And the good thing about this playoff is that it turned out 100% different from the championship game that "everyone knew" would the the "right" one.  (And I never mind seeing Nick Saban lose; great coach, but a rotten human being IMHO.)  Of course that is why it has so many detractors in the sporting press, because they like to control the outcome to feed their sportswriter egos.  Now it is at least decided more on the field.

I just wish more of the athletes were actually students...but I do enjoy the college game far more than the NFL product, from which I find myself drifting further and further from each year.  (And Roger Goodell is another PoS in my book.  Makes $44 million a year to run what was classified as a NPO...now they have apparently given up their tax exempt status which means they will no longer have to disclose what their top execs make)

For me it has to be the Olympic athletics competition - so many events in track and field.  I'm particularly interested in the sprint and middle distance events.  Somehow the world championships don't quite hold the same degree of kudos for me.

Caraiocajeff,
Living in South Shields all I can say is they couldn't make a decent team out of both Newcastle and Sunderland. If I had to pick it would be Newcastle but they are both shite.
Best sporting event for me,my grandson's sports day.
You don't need to be paid a fortune to entertain the spectators.

With regard to Saban, great college coach, tough to argue with the results. I didn't mind him much through his Michigan State days. Became grating at LSU. Then, the Miami Dolphins/Alabama transition thing made him look rather flaky. These days he comes off to me as persnickety with the media, eccentric, and pretty much a diva. I can't help but think of a used car salesman when I see him. Still, can't argue with his results. He's a brilliant recruiter and head coach, and like so many great football coaches has a strong pedigree in Ohio

With regard to the NFL, tough to under appreciate as it's played at such an elite level. Truly amazing athletes. But I prefer the unique excitement of the college football arena. On any given Saturday, any number of upsets will occur. Plus I much prefer the overtime format of college football. Much fairer and more exciting than the NFL. The whole student-athlete issue is a topic unto itself, but it is what it is and I'll root within the current system.
