Tidal Streaming

Posted by: AJK on 31 August 2015

Hi

I have the following equipment

SuperUnit (BT/Spotify Connect Version)

Synology NAS 214 se

Mac Mini

Netegar 5 way 1GB switch (connected to all of above)

QED Fibre cable between Mac Mini Audio Output & SU Digital Input 3

iPhone 6

I am looking the best way to use Tidal (assume Offline Mode).

I am currently using Tidal on the Mac Mini and then playing with Digital Audi Output configured in Sound via fibre optic to SI digital input 3.

Is there a better way?

Thanks and Br,

AK

How does Bubble uPnP support Tidal?

Why is uPnP better than digital via fibre.

isn't the best solution just to have a USB 3.0 stick plugged in with 24 bit FLAC files?

That solution works perfect for me...

1. I'm not sure how you're going to stream Tidal via a usb stick.

2. USB sticks with 24-bit flac files hold a very small portion of my library.  Do I want to be juggling sticks in and out . . . with no simple and effective way to keep track of what files are on which stick?  Absolutely not.

Why is UPnP better than digital via fibre?nn Was this not the standard method connecting CD players to Amps?

AJK - for me, UPnP opened the possibility of one server serving music to hi fi's in two different parts of the home.  My belief is that, inherently, sound-wise, it's impossible to conclude that per se one is always better sounding than the other.  It comes down to how you implement each, for both sound and convenience.  And as others will surely chime in, UPnP, when it's not working right, can leave many frustrated.  I believe that such frustrations are less likely to occur when a non-networked connection is used between server and player.  That said, I have had zero frustrations with UPnP for a long time now.  Touch wood!

Using a computer>DAC (which is basically what you're doing now) is an easy way to access all internet streaming sources without worrying about what Naim do or don't support in an integrated sense.

Sound quality differences (if any) are still up for debate and endless argument.  If you wished to go the UPnP/networked route, Bubble seems an interesting solution, though I've not tried it.

As to what is most convenient, it all depends on preference and factors like where your computer is located vis a vis the main system, remote control options, etc....

Hi

I have managed to get Tidal to work through Linn Kazoo/Bubble uPnP to the Naim SuperUniti

Ive also tried the Audirvana Plus/iTunes/Mac Mini/Fibre to Naim  SuperUniti via Fibre to Digital Input 3 - This produces noticably better sound.  The Audirvana software seems to convert the format to the best it can e.g 16 - 24 bit.

My music server isn't co-located with the SU, so my sledge hammer solution is to plug my iPad into the front USB, and then start a connection by playing a track from the iPad's own music app.

I then open up Tidal, start the music up, and then everything just works.  The connection continues for as long as it is plugged in.  As for sound quality, the SU detects song and stream information as being CD quality, so I guess that's good enough for me? Am assuming it bypasses the iPad DAC when it does this, just as when it is receiving information from iOS's own Music app - but, I could be wrong.

Not the most elegant, but the quickest path to Tidal for me (I assume you can also do this on your iPhone) until Tidal and/or Naim decide to create a native Tidal option.

Agreed, I have had no frustration with Audirvana Hugo - it just works

+1, I streamed music and video for decades before moving to this solution and it does indeed, just work

Hi I have an old iPhone5 connected to my WiFi. I have Tidal installed on it and stream the output to apple TV which is optically connected to my UQ2.

I do this exactly the same with Qobuz. Both using the same setup, the quality of Qobuz sounds better to me (should not be, but still). I compared each time the same tracks of the same albums. Qubuz comes close to my own ripped CD's. I hope this is useful to you.

cheers

Yes, that's the naim-way of communicating about this to their loyal customers. I've had the same earlier this week... Pathetic If you ask me.

and by all accounts there is a lot of it about.

I'm not that bothered as I've been using a SC through NDX to Hugo for Qobuz & Deezer which isn't too bad - but nowhere near the quality of native streaming through NDX I imagine.

If it is close to release I thought I might jump in and get used to it for a while that's all.
