Birthday Party Music
Posted by: Sloop John B on 11 September 2015
The Sloops are having a bash,
I'm 50 and Ms Sloop is 21, a joint 71st party.
I want to give the DJ a list of music to play. I'm told all the songs have to be danceable, slow sets are so passé.
I'm going to try and have 50% of the playlist.
If you could chip in with 10 sure fire dance-floor classics I'd appreciate it as I'm hitting a bit of a blank after a brisk start.
Armand Van Helden's New York Odyssey is a good party album. The tracks are segued, too.
Ten songs seems so random. Here's a suggestion for a theme. When my wife turned 50, almost six years ago, I chose songs for her surprise party from the year of her birth, 1959. In your case you could select dance songs from 1965 for you and from 1994 for her. I think it would add quite a fun element to the proceedings and guests could speculate on which era had better music.
New Order, Blue Monday
Human League, Love Action
Soft Cell, Tainted Love
Chic, Le Freak
The Ruts, Staring at the Rude Boys
Spizz Energy, Where's Captain Kirk?
The Specials, Too Much Too Young
Grace Jones, Love is the Drug
Dead Kennedys, Too Drunk to xxxx
Madness, Night Boat to Cairo
Adam and the Ants, Antmusic
That's eleven of my very favourite danceable songs. I used to DJ at university and these were all sure fire winners back in the early 80s, though when I played the Kennedys track at the English Society disco without realising that all the academics were there it caused something of a rumpus. Damn good dance track though. As for what young Ms Sloop might like I have no idea. Deadmaus?
How about
The Birdie song
Village People - YMCA
Tony Christie - Is This The Way To Amarillo
Rick Astley - Never Gonna Give You Up
Whitney Houston - I Will Always Love You
Steps - Tragedy
The Gap Band - Oops Upside Your head
Wham - Wake Me Up before You Go Go
Black Lace - Agadoo
Boney M - Ma Baker
Jive Bunny - Anything by them
The above should clear the room quick quickly.
Richard
Richard that list makes even '94 music look good.
Choosing just 10 such songs is indeed difficult but here's my list
Other than the first two being my all time favs the rest are in no particluar order :-)
I've never grown out out of dance music (I'm now 50) and still listen to this genre often
I put it down to the often high production values and the fact that Naim kit loves it (PRAT??)
Rhythm is the dancer - Snap
Never too much - Luther Vandross
Not over yet - Grace
The future of the future - Deep Dish
Set you free - N-Trance
Uninvited - Freemasons
Don 't walk away - Jade

Passion - Gat Decor

Hope the party goes with a bang!!

Strange one of my earlier posts in my Naim forum life was the play list from my 40th party. This having to be danceable is less eclectic but I think me and a few others will enjoy it.
