N-serve crashes several times per day

Posted by: Plajb on 14 September 2015

Controls my Unitiserve with N-serve, the app on iPhone 6. Every time I switch from the app to another app or the homescreen, and then returns, the N-serve app shuts down.
App-version 2.11
IOS version 8.4.1
Any suggestions?

Yes I have similar issues still with n-serve on an IPad Air Running IOS 8.3  The last update of the App sorted out some of the causes of these crashes, but I think not all of them.

I suggest you email support@naimaudio.com and report it (because they say they don't always read postings on the forum). And it's only if we report these things that they will know it needs looking at.

Same here, on iPad air 2, and iphone 6, both running iOS 8.4.

there is a button in the app labelled " stay connected" - I have yet to work out what it does if anything.

Not good.

I have always assumed that the Stay Connected button changes a setting in the Unitiserve rather than in the App. But I never selected it.

After a crash, if you double-click the home button on the idevice, you can see that n-serve is still running, so it seems that the bit if the App which writes to the screen is the problem, but the Naim guys know that.

I have the same problem with the N-Serve app & think it has been reported to Naim a few times over the last few months.

The last app update helped a bit but the app still crashes a lot on my iPad Air running ISO 8.4.1

Maybe ISO 9.0 will help when its released in a few days time?

Naim any update regarding the N-Serve app issues is a fix in the works?

I've had the same problem for some time, and Naim are aware of it. It happens on my iPhone 6, but never on my iPad. Just as well if you let Naim support know anyway, so they can keep tabs on the issue.

Same problem here on iPhone 5S and iPad Air 2, Naim is aware of thus happening on a very small amount of devices. After two updates it was supposed to be fixed (had something to do with memory IIRC) but it still happens on my devices... I gave up on this one

Michel

Thanks! Have sent an email to the support adress now.
Earlier i had the Unitiserve connected directly to my router with cable. A while ago I moved my router, and now have the unitiserve connected with cable to an airport express serving as an wireless bridge. Not shure if the app has crashed more or less after this.

I am surprised that Naim say this happens on a small number of units as I have it consistently on my iPad Air 2 and two iPhone 6 Plus.

It is interesting that it affects some users and not others.  In my case I ran the last beta with no crashes but the release version of the App, which Naim say is exactly the same as the beta, coincided with me getting crashes again.  I suspect that now Naim have dealt with the memory-related crashes, we may be left with effects which are related to particular US or HDX servers or particular network issues.  I don't remember anyone reporting here that the problem affected one of the idevices and not another.  It seems to be all or nothing, which suggests to me that the problem lies outside the idevice and the issue is how the App handles those external factors.  What are they though??

Stay connected button causes the app to attempt to block the iOS screen timeout which also sends apps to a background running mode. I find that Stay Connected results in far more frequent crashes. Turning this off does mean that you need to keep waking up the iDevice but it also forces both nStream or the Naim app to refresh their state which seems to prevent a lot of crashes.

This topic is about the n-Serve app, however the option to 'stay connected' is switched off on my devices and the app still crashes ...

Yes same with me.  I only use n-serve when I'm ripping or editing the metadata on rips, so I never saw a need to tell it to keep connected.

I have been investigating but I was convinced that you were wrong about its being a Unitiserve issue. However my findings actually seem to suggest that you are right and that it is due to the app handling an exception badly from the network or Unitiserve. I have four Unitiserves and the recent apps introduced this error where it never had existed before. Yesterday the app would crash immediately on opening or on trying to open an album. A hard reboot of the iPad did not help. I found that my mac base n-serve app was dropping in and out as well. I rebooted the Unitiserve and the app is much happier. I think that it had some records locked and the app could not handle the response.

In doing all this I discovered that many albums have the tracks out of order yet they are right in the folder and in their metadata. In fact I cannot tell how they are being sorted. Perhaps I should start a new thread on that. Thanks for your help, Dave.

I have also found that a reboot of the IPad doesn't help and I once killed all other Apps so as to give the n-serve App all of my iPads RAM and that didn't make any difference either.  Probably what I should try is putting my US onto a network which has nothing other than my iPad running on it, but life is too short. It's quicker just to reselect the App.  But I haven't seen any issue of wrongly ordered tracks etc, except one when a downloaded album was all muddled up.  I rang Naim support and they said to delete it from the US and then copy it on again.  That worked fine.

Just as Lumos indicated: only the recent apps introduced this error, it had never existed before ...

I have it in principle on my IPad Air every day. So it's not just a small issue. In the past the app was much more stable, at least for me.

After I installed IOS 9 on the iPhone, it seems more stable. Installed IOS 9.0.1 this morning, will test it this weekend

I've had this problem on my iPhone 5S for ages and also on iPad and iPad mini.
I updated to IOS 9 this morning and N-Serve does now seem to work properly, just as Plajb (above) said :-)
