iOS 9 from 16 September

Posted by: Disposable hero on 15 September 2015

Some advice on web guides recommend backing up an existing iOS 8 device through iTunes/ iCloud just before starting any iOS 9 update.  Are iOS users here intending to dive straight in to 9, or wait and see how others get on?

I can't help myself - I always dive straight in with a new iOS and go through the teething pains.

Having said that iOS 9 does not look such an exciting upgrade as others have been in the past (for iPhone at least). Finally bringing true multi tasking to (some) iPads is very welcome even if a little late to the party. Also looking forward to watch OS2 - hoping it makes the watch a little more useful!!

I back up my iOS devices to iCloud on a nightly basis - although I believe stepping back a version once you've installed the new iOS is not terribly straight forward (I've never had need to).

My iPad is not my main 'poota,  its used for e-mail when travelling & the simple quick viewing things around the house like news & weather,   but its 95% used for Naim app  .......  so I'm jumping straight in with iOS 9.

I've had no probs with previous Apple upgrades so don't expect anything different this time.

Anyone know what time its available - I guess the usual 10am Central Apple Time

PC advisor -

"If you're in the UK, you'll probably get the notification in the evening - after 6pm - but it's likely Apple's servers will be running at full capacity so it could take all night to upgrade your iPhone or iPad to iOS 9".

In previous years I have sometimes found upgrades to be earlier than the advertised time - not that I'm sat there pressing "check for software update" on my phone repeatedly throughout the day (honest!!).

The OP is asking whether to dive in and install IOS9 asap or wait. This is kind of off-topic for this forum, but I suppose many of us will shortly think this through and want to know that our n-serve and naim Apps will still work on IOS 9.

Personally I am quite careful about IOS upgrades and I wait to see how they work out before I take them myself. In the case of IOS 8 for example, I didn't install it until IOS 8.3 was out, mainly because I wasn't convinced until then that Apple had sorted out all the issues with Bluetooth which is important for one App I use all the time and for my in-car connectivity too and also because Apple won't let you downgrade again even if the new IOS is broken for what you want it to do.

With IOS 9 unless there is something about it that really is important to you, I would let all those people buying iPhone 6S and 6S Plus go first. A few days will give you a good idea how it's going across a large number of installs.

In any case you must back up your iPhone or iPad before upgrading the IOS.  This is trivial to do on iCloud, even if you don't have a computer which will allow you to do it through iTunes. Personally I am happy to go with just iCloud, but I also reboot the phone/tablet immediately before I do the IOS upgrade  so that everything in the hardware/firmware is working properly when I start. I never saw Apple recommend this, but to me as an engineer this is just a simple precaution which has no downside and a possibly crucial upside.

I wouldn't expect there to be any issue with the naim Apps on IOS 9, but if you hold off installing IOS 9 for a few days, you can also see whether any of the members here have spotted any issues.

But if you jump right in and take IOS 9 from the get go, if you have any new problems with the naim Apps, do post here and tell us won't you?!

best

I've been using the Public Beta of ios9 on my iPad (and iPhone) from day one and am currently using the so called Gold Master version (ie the last iteration prior to the actual release). I can say that it is glitch free and comes with a wealth of worthwhile enhancements. incidentally, im also running the Public Beta of El Capitan on my Mac Mini acting as my music server, and the whole thing works flawlessly with my Muso. Jump straight in, but make a backup first.

Just make sure your iCloud saved it all, 5GB isn't a large amount of free space depending on how many pics et al you have on the device.  Failing that, just plug it into your PC/Mac and do an old skool local backup as well.

The bigger issue is the apps you use. If you are like Mike and mainly use the Apple core functionality you should be fine off the bat, the only issue is the early folks hammer the servers and it takes time to download the new iOS.

But, I have had issues with some apps in the past not working well with the new iOS.  The issues ranged from battery draining to just crashing/not running. But they normally get fixed within a week. But prepare for a lot of app updates anyway.

You should have your iOS device set up to automatically backup to iCloud.  Why wouldn't you??  This is a significant feature; if your device is ever lost or destroyed, setting up a new device that 'mirrors' your old takes 15 minutes if you've a proper iCloud backup.  Most of that time is downloading the settings, apps and data from iCloud.

Absolutely agree! And it makes buying a new iPad or iPhone, as well as  getting a replacement one,  hassle free - all your apps and data can get downloaded from the cloud to your new purchase - while you wait in the Apple Store if you wish. Excellent.

I'm running it now. Perceptibly faster Safari scrolling for a start!

I'll live in Italy and have a 100Mbit internet fiber connection: I started a couple of hours ago the download of IOS 9 both on IPad and IPhone and I'm roughly at the 50% mark !

Has anyone had an issue where 3rd party lightening cables have stopped working with iPhone and iPad after doing the is update?

I use an Amazon Basics cable in the car and it still works.

Don't know about the new "find iPhone app". Is it to lock onto iPhone with iPad or to create an issue in erasing iPhone data ?

Updated my iPad, iOS then had an issue on the specific 802.11ac wifi channel I was using, really bizarre upgrade issue. I assigned a new channel on my wifi access point and all was ok...

Installed alright but I'm finding it a bit bug-gy. Wouldn't open messages or a couple of other apps on my 5S before. Annoying but I assume it will be fixed. Hope it isn't something to force me into upgrading sooner rather than later.

Upgraded and some things are better like the little icon in the corner that lets me go back to safari from u tube and it seems to of fixed my iPhone's ability to communicate with my car I seem to of regained the steering wheel controls through the iphone.

But I seem to have a bit of a problem with various apps causing freezing etc but I'm sure once the apps update all will be well

With former IOS versions I used the IPad to stream from Qobuz via the Lighting-USB adapter to my Dac. After updating to IOS 9 this isn't possible anymore. Either Airplay doesn't show me the USB- connection at all, when it does by chance, streaming doesn' t work.

The reason for this seems to be that Apple changed the Airplay protocol. Anybody there with similar experience or even knowing a solution?

So far battery life is far improved on my iphone 6 - almost doubled!!

on the downside there are some annoying niggles with the Bluetooth control in my Evoque. I have the A-team theme music in itunes (something I needed for a job) and it starts playing whenever I receive a call and I'm unable to stop it playing whilst on the call. What started off as an amusing quirk quickly turned into something infuriating for the duration of a 2 hour car journey and numerous  calls.
