Unitilite + Linn Keilidh

Posted by: Becks on 16 September 2015

Hi,

I have a Unitilite connected to a pair of old Linn Keilidh.

These speakers were passed to me from brother, who used them paired with a Nait 3 amp, it sounded great, with deep bass and detail.

With the Unitilite, however, the sound is very thin and bright, hardly any bass.

These Keilidhs are 4 ohms, could this be the reason for the weak sound? I know the Lite can drive 4 ohms... but would 8 ohms speakers be easier to drive and give fuller sound?

Anyone has experience with such a setup?

Thanks

Missed this thread originally. No one seems to have asked the OP - when you compared the sound with your brother's use of the Nait 3, was that in the same room and same speaker position? my assumption is not, in which case can I suggest borrowing his Nait 3 and swapping over, to see if the bass comes back, or better still put the speakers back in his room in same places as they were.

Bass problems are often to do with the room, whether that be one room enhancing or another cancelling, and the apparently dramatic difference you describe sounds more like that to me - which to me seems confirmed by the recent restart of this thread by Gav's contribution.

I rarely say this but I am fairly envious. It sounds like a truly weird setup but no doubt it does the biz for movies. The Keilidhs have serious bottom end too when driven right so you probably don't even need a sub.

Not so bizarre Feeling Zen. B&W fronts, Monitor Audio Centre, Miller and Kreisel sub and Mission rears: a truly eclectic salmagundi of a system, but it does sound good! The Keilidhs will sit half way down the sides.

First para should have ended ...but using your Unitilite.

Thanks for all the replies,

Gav - your input on the neats- ceilidhs comparison, specifically the Neats being  brighter than the Keilidhs was very useful, especially as I don't have where to audition the Neats  where I live, and it made me reconsider buying them blind, so big thanks for your help on this.

I am starting to think that this could be due to the room, as Innocent Bystander said. I will get my brother's Neat 3 next week and try it out in my house, which probably could prove that. I use them in my den, which quite smaller than his living room, around 3X3 meters, and about 2 meters apart, close to the walls, with wood floors.

There is another issue,  I didn't mention it because many people told me it is not an issue - the dust caps on my Keilidhs have been 'tortured' and taken apart by my brothers kids. I asked a few people about this, all told me that missing dust caps shouldn't have an impact on sound quality, and are only there to keep the dust off, and as the units themselves are fine, I waited on repairing them.
Anyone here knows otherwise (regarding dust cap sound impact)?

Again,

Thanks a lot for everyone's help!
