'No network' on Unitiqute display

Posted by: Alco on 20 September 2015

Hi guys,

This is my first post in the streaming department of the Naim forum.

Earlier this week I stumbled over an ad, where a mint s/h Unitiqute was offered..

I was tempted enough to place a fair openingbid, especially as the seller lived within a 10 minute walk from my place! The seller accepted my bid, so I picked it up friday.

Now, my experience with Naim streaming devices (and the n-stream app) hasn't been all that great tbh, (compared to my trusty old SBT) but for the (little to) no-risk price I got the Qute for, I wanted to give it another try.

Well,...luck seemed to be on my side fridaynight. I hooked up the unit, and... to my surprise the little fella configured itself, within appr. 5 minutes!

It worked flawless since and sonically I've been quite happy so far too, but...last night it seems that I was not allowed to enjoy some music.  I get the message 'No network' in the Qute's display.

So,..no UPNP, no Iradio. The only thing that's working is playing music stored on a USB flash-drive, using the IR remote.

This morning the n-stream app can't even find the qute, saying 'Uniti doesn't respond'  (well, something like that, as I'm Dutch, and I have translated the Dutch error to English)

I never had these issues with my SBT. I have no IT knowledge, so I hope someone can help me out in simple terms what might be the problem (en even more the solution) here.

O, I'm using LMS as my server (tried Asset in the past, but prefered LMS) and I tried restoring the Qute to factory-settings.

Thanx in advance!

Best regards,

Alco

This happens too often on my SU - under the "No Network" message in small letters is "press list to try again", this always works though it may take 2 or 3 tries and far too much time. Maybe the UQ is the same?

Thans for your reply Pev,

Tried that, but unfortunately (as expected) it didn't help. (tried it many times)

Can you find the network under Tools, Network?  Can you 'manually' reconnect?

Posted on: 20 September 2015 by Gavin B

What firmware version is it?  My Qute struggled to hold on to the network until I loaded 4.3, and that solved the problem.  I don't think my previous install had completely properly.

Hi Gavin,

Fridaynight I could find LMS (Logitech Media Server) as well as the UQ in my netwerk environment on my PC, but now... all of a sudden they're gone.

I'm sorry, but I don't know how to manually reconnect.

My Qute is a 2012 model with 3.16.00 firmware.

(I don't know how to upgrade and tbh, I'm also a little afraid to do so, as I have bad experiences with my SBT "upgrades" in the past)

Hi Alco.

it looks like a network issue. There are many threads on this subject but the best advice seems to be to reboot your network. Try turning off your network devices (UQ, NAS drive, switches and router) and then power them up starting at the router, switches, Nas drive and lastly the UQ. Hopefully, then the router will recognise all the devices and assign them their network addresses.

You're really going to want to upgrade it, and I doubt Naim will be able to do much in the way of tech support for you if you don't.  It's running quite old firmware.

The problem could be with the Qute, but is more likely with your home network.  Could you post how your home network is set up, and how the Qute is connected to it.

Finally, do you really use the old n-Stream, or the current Naim App from the App Store?

Posted on: 20 September 2015 by David Hendon

Yes I would try restarting the UQ and if that doesn't work then reboot the router. If you are using wifi, then try moving the UQ much closer to the router temporarily.  It is better to use Ethernet cable than wifi and if you are using wifi then I would try an ethernet cable instead and see if that works.

I agree it is definitely worth doing the firmware upgrade and also you may just as well use the new naim App which is pretty well sorted now.

@Sjbabbey:

I tried rebooting everything (router, pc, and UQ, without any luck), though not specifically in that order, so will try again, thanks! (currently not able to, but will report back later today)

@Bart:

I kinda expected that a firmware upgrade would be advised. (tried it a few times in the past with my SBT and things got worse after that. Since then I ignored firmware upgrades and it's been working fine ever since)

I don't know how to do the firmware upgrade though. It seems like I need some special cable.

I'm really sorry Bart, but I don't have a clue how...

I have a wired network, and my Qute is connected to my router. (which is in the same room)

I can only use the n-stream app on my old Ipod touch. I have the current Naim app on my Android tablet, but it's worthless to me. I don't understand it at all. (it began asking questions about adding a Muso)  I don't like controlling a streaming device from a tablet though, so I'd like to use my trusty old Ipod Touch.  (which probably could do with a bloody upgrade too, but I haven't figured out how to either)

Hi Alco

You will need to have your UQ connected to your network in order to update its firmware so you must sort out the network problem first. Good luck.

Posted on: 20 September 2015 by Alco

Ok, thanks Sjbabbey.

So,..it seems I have two problems...
(o dear, and I haven't even mentioned the issues I had with the n-stream app)

I wouldn't worry about the app just yet. If your UQ isn't connecting to the network the app won't be able to see it. Once you have resolved the network problem the UQ should show up and you can add it as a "Room" in the naim app.

Posted on: 20 September 2015 by David Hendon

And if nothing seems to be working, try unplugging both ends of the Ethernet cable connecting your UQ to your router and plugging it in again! firmly. I have one Ethernet cable which needs a firmer than usual push to click home properly and that catches me out every now and then....

Posted on: 20 September 2015 by Alco

Sjbabbey,...I have just disconnected the UQ, router and my PC (I don't use a NAS) and as you adviced, I then powered up the router, pc and the UQ.  (for now) my network does show the UQ again!

Nevertheless, the display of my UQ still says no network.

Posted on: 20 September 2015 by sjbabbey

Check the settings (the spanner key on the remote) for the UQ. Go to network settings and see whether it shows if the unit is connected wirelessly or wired (I'm assuming you removed the wireless aerial if one was fitted), check the status (Connected?) and whether using DHCP and showing the UQ's MAC address.

I'm also assuming you tried pressing OK button when you got the no network error to 'try again'

Yes, I did countless times, but without any luck.

I just took a few snapshots of the display on my UQ, showing its network settings:

(the wireless aerial hasn't been connected)

OK. You indicated that your network was showing the UQ. How did you find this out?

Are you able to log in to your router's webpage via its IP address (you can find it's IP address by googling the make and model of the router for example a BT Home Hub has an IP address of 192.168.1.254). Once you are in to the router check the network settings and connected devices. Look for the DHCP network range [it may be something like 192.168.1.64 - 192.168.1.253]

Next find the IP address assigned to your UQ. It should be within the DHCP range. If it is not then this may be the cause of your problem.

Posted on: 20 September 2015 by David Hendon

Did you try another Ethernet cable between the UQ and the router?

I found out by following your advice to reboot the router, PC and UQ in the order you mentioned.

Btw,...the UQ is already gone again in my network. Instead it now shows my Panasonic smart tv. (my goodness, this is getting more weird by the hour)

I was able to log in into my router. The DHCP range is indeed very close to the router's IP adress.

How/where can I find the IP adress assigned to my UQ ? I can't find it in the network settings on the UQ itself, is that correct ?

@David: I'm afraid that's not an option as it's all tucked away underneath laminate skirting boards and I don't have another ethernet cable.

If the cable was to blame, I'd think that my Squeezebox wouldn't work either, and that's been working fine for the last 4 years.

Posted on: 20 September 2015 by David Hendon

You can check your IP address on the UQ. It may not be exactly the same because mine is running the latest firmware, but you select the spanner on the remote and then navigate down to factory settings.  Select that and the top option is System Status.  The third or fourth line down is your IP address. You can get back out of there without changing anything by either pressing "exit" on your remote or by pressing spanner again, which takes you up a level in the menu structure.

if your router does have wifi, then you could if course go down the route of trying to connect using wifi, although that isn't recommended for permanent use, it's fine for getting things going!

good luck

So presumably your UQ showed up in Windows Explorer under Network when you rebooted your PC?

If you go into your router's web page and look for a "Devices" tab or link/button (it may be in the network settings/section) this should show all the network devices together withe their MAC addresses and IP addresses including your Unitiqute. You know the MAC address (from your screenshot) so you should be able to identify the UQ and its IP address from this table.

It may be easier to follow David's instructions unless the IP address doesn't show in the system status.

Posted on: 20 September 2015 by Alco

Thank you David. I noticed that my UQ's IP adres is 0.0.0.0

Should be the same/close to my router's IP adress ?

Posted on: 20 September 2015 by David Hendon

That just means there isn't an IP address assigned, which is what I expected since it says no network.

the reason I keep mentioning the cable is because it seems that when you turned your UQ on, it said "hello I'm here please give me an IP address" to your router which probably did so, but your UQ never got the reply So it is showing no network. your router probably has given up waiting for a "thank you I'm  staying around" message from your UQ. Your Panasonic TV may be more forgiving! There are lots of people on the forum who know much better than me how DHCP works, so maybe one of them can help.

i suggest you reboot the UQ again and then go and look in your router devices or assigned addresses place and see if the router thinks it's assigned an address as sjbabbey suggests. If so then presumably you could try entering that address manually into the UQ, but I must admit exactly how you do that I don't know, but it won't be too hard.

best

Or you could leavewired networks for the moment and try connecting your UQ by wifi.

Posted on: 20 September 2015 by sjbabbey

This looks like a network discovery issue or possibly a problem with the network card inside the UQ.

To try to discount the latter, can you try David's suggestion of connecting wirelessly? Alternatively, do you have a laptop which you could use to connect to the UQ via an ethernet cable?
