Naim N272 & Power Amps

Posted by: Steve GTX on 22 September 2015

Hi,

Thank you to everyone who commented on my proposed system upgrade and following a home trial of the N272 I decided to order one and all being well, I pick it up tomorrow.

My existing systems if Musical Fidelity A3.2 pre amp, 2 x A3.2 power amps and A3.2 CD player. Monitor Audio GR60's. Chord Signature Interconnects and good speaker cable (but I can't remember what they are!). Have ripped all the CD's to FLAC and keep them on a NAS Drive (with a RAID Back Up).

The long term goal is to upgrade all of it to Naim and the N272 is the first stage.

My budget is not unlimited but I'm not afraid to pay more IF the results are significantly better.

Is one Naim power amp better than my 2 x Musical Fidelity's?

I looked at the 200 power amp but I've also been offered a used 250.2.

What do you guys (and girls) think?

Thanks

Steve

Thanks for the feedback.

I've now got the 272 and am giving it a good workout before I take the text step but my first impression is that I can already notice an improvement in detail, depth and clarity.

My local dealer has been extremely helpful and has offered more equipment to audition (He know when he's on to a good thing).

With regard to ChrisSU's comments, one thing that I have not said is that I want to reduce the box count without compromising the quality too much.

As for buying ex demo or a PX...I'm thinking that I will spend the next few months wishing that I had got the DR. I know Naim are proposing an upgrade from 250.2 to DR but this service has not yet been costed and once you've had it serviced at the same time, I'm sure that there will be no real saving. So, I'm leaning towards a new DR (subject to a really good trial) and to hell with the cost.

Looks like I could get quite a good price for my first child....... and I get to keep my kidneys!

Hi Steve,

First congratulations on the N-272 it is a fantastic bit of kit and takes a lot of beating imho I have upgraded to a 250-DR from the 250-2 and the difference is significant, it really is a different beast altogether, good as the 250-2 was the DR is in a totally different league and works incredibly well with the 272,there is a synergy that is just not quite there with the older amp, I was also lucky to be able to go for an XPS-DR as an external PSU and that brings the performance level way up so a possible upgrade for you in future, certainly one worth considering! I preferred it to the NDX/282 HiCap DR  with my PMC 20-26 but others will have differing opinions and that's fine but for me this system is spot on and just does everything right.

One last point which I think may have already been mentioned, the 272 took around 8 weeks to fully open up and sound its best and that was left on 24/7.

Nowt wrong with a 200/272 combination. Of course, the 250DR sounds better for more dosh, but if you get a decent second-hand 200 you can sell it for pretty much what you paid when you can afford to upgrade. I'm a firm believer that you shouldn't buy new if you're intending to upgrade later, but second-hand can be a excellent stopgap while you save up.

Only one person can tell you whether any of this is better than your existing kit, and that's me. I mean you.

UPDATE 06/10/15.

I've spent ages listening to the N272 and the more I listen, the more I like it! and have now picked up a 250DR to try and home (all thanks to my patient, informative and not pushy Naim dealer - am I allowed to give them credit on this forum?) and I'm sitting here at work watching the clock go very slowly before I can take it home and plug it in.

My question is this......The 250DR is brand new and still in the box. Any advice on how to "run in" a new power amp?

You plug it in, turn on your favourite music and enjoy it. Mine sounded great for a week or so, a bit dodgy for a while and now it's getting better each day. I played the radio through it while I was out during the first few days, but otherwise there's nothing special to do. Have fun.

Thanks for the reply Hungryhalibut,

What sort of volume is recommended?

The 300 I am getting is a 2013 model from a dealer, I'll run it for a while then if the DR upgrade is affordable I'll go for that next year.   Planned to go 250DR but changed my mind, aim to skip 252 and go from my 282 to a 552 after that.

Gus, did you hear both the 250DR and the 300 - what did you think if so?

Unfortunately I did't get to the dealer for a demo as a family member was rushed to hospital.   The 300 was shipped but is still in it's box, hope to get them in action on Saturday depends on how things go.

After taking the plunge on a long term investment I was slightly cheesed off it was improved on just a few weeks after I bought it.
