My recent purchase od Canon EOS 40D to replace my damaged EOS 350D.
I am having trouble getting shots of of the camera via the USB port, for some reason iMac doesn't see the camera.
If I plug the CF card into a USB reader then all is well, but it's a bit of a faff.
If I manually start some of the included Canon applications ie EOS Utility, which is supposed to auto start it allows pairing over WiFi/LAN but just gives an alert "FireWallAlertMsg" but as far as I can see the firewall has this programme "allowed".
Any pointers would be appreciated.

Sorry can't Big, I never connect camera to PC, personally always found it easier to stick card in reader otherwise you can end up with issues you have now. Where's the bother with using card reader?

Hi Jamie,It's just that I have always used the USB lead to iMac before and it's convenient. I guess using the reader is fine.
I have never had issues with the 350D or any of our point and shoot Pannys.

If it helps I always found best Canon software to be 'zoom browser' which was hardly hi tech but was simple and straightforward as a download/library tool. It was replaced by Imagebrowser, which isn't. If not already using ZB, you may want to try and find an old download from any Canon sites (for some reason the Australian one keeps more stuff) and try that?

I have no problem downloading via USB from my 40D to PC, but my son couldn't get it to download to to his MAC. He gave up in the end and used a card reader.
Might be a long shot, but try re-setting camera to factory settings, but if you do check the new save settings, I've a feeling it doesn't save to LRAW.
I'd also recommend you buy a copy of "Canon EOS 40D Digital Field Guide" It'll give you an insight into just how powerful 40D really is.
