Biamping with SN - NAP 200, 250 or 250DR?

Posted by: Singslinger on 24 September 2015

Are there any Supernait 2 users here who are using the amp in a passive, stereo biamped configuration?

In the SN2's  manual,  biamping is depicted with the NAP 200. There've been previous threads on this forum which say this is the most suitable match. Does this mean the 250 or 250DR is not suitable?

Thanks in advance.

It works with a 250, 300 etc just fine technically.

However, the 250 and 200 sound very different. Normally when you bi-amp, similarly voiced amps are recommended.

You will also find that most (but not all) members of the forum do not recognise the benefit of passive bi-amping with Naim and may suggest to use the SN as a preamp only. I confess to belonging to that group.

Thanks for the reply. Maybe that's why those who have biamped, tend to recommend the 200. Or perhaps funds are better spent on a Supercap?

The same question could be asked about the speakers.

I'm interested to know too.. what about 2 sets of 155XS & a Snaxo with the Allaes..

I bi-amp with a 200 & 250.2 because I own JBL S4700 speakers which have 15" LF drivers. It works perfectly AND the SQ is much better. Having dynamic headroom for transients is what it's all about. When music has peaks the amp/s need the extra juice to provide the extra sound for that passage. Remember every 3dB of sound requires twice the watts to produce realistic sound. It comes down to your speakers efficiency ie 90dB/2.83V@1m, bottom line, if you can afford it, remember it means twice the I/C and speaker cables, then go for it!

i would also recommend, in this case of passive biamping, to use the SN only as pre.

200 will be good enough to show a few solid improvements, 250 even more so, but as other have said, the direction of the 2 amps is quite different.

BUT, instead of a 200, or 250, i would really try a 200DR. while it does not alter the direction of the SN power amp, it is like it enhances it, and adds a bit of 250 flavour at least in voices portrayal.

i have done the comparison of SN2 power amp section vs 200DR, and i have to say, it was one of the biggest jumps in SQ in Naim range i have experimented, and that without altering the direction of the sound, or changing colours in any way.

while i reckon the 200DR is not a perfect amp (as the 250 or 250DR is not either), for the money asked (now with current pound/eur rate to about 3k eur) it shows a lot of good things, and for a fraction of the money asked for the higher end Naim gear, ir gets you in the Naim high-end flavoured area with at least you feet if not your entire body and it does this even more so compared to the older 200 (non dr)

if i would own and like a SN or SN2, and wanted more of that, but not change direction, i would buy a 200DR without blinking and use SN as a preamp. yes, the 202 is superior to SN preamp, but it also sounds slightly different, so some might not choose 202/200dr over SN2. but SN2/200dr will surely suit those nonetheless.

just my 2 cents (based on years of experimenting different Naim combos)

ooh, and yes, i forgot that... as OP mentioned, the 200 is depicted in Naim's amp manuals as the obvious upgrade...they certainly printed that over a solid SQ testing, i would like to believe that!
