N-Stream An Orphan App?
Posted by: Tog on 02 May 2011
Well guys with no sign of the promised chat event .... where next for the humble N-Stream app? A control point is a vital part of any streaming system and so far progress has been er.. slow.

The only specific betas that Naim have commited to relate to the n-Serve. They seem to sympathise with n-Stream users, but have made no real commitments as apparently it's more difficult with UPNP.

There should be a .x release shortly, if all goes well, as I understand it–I cannot comment on something that has not been released on the App Store yet.
I will be very happy if I turn out to be paranoid!
Cheers,

No shouting - and prior to the last update we had a year of development.
As you can see in another thread - I'm not saying that N-Stream is rubbish. On a fast Ipad 2 my copy zips along quite nicely and is very usable. It lacks a number of features including the ability to cache the library tree which would speed the whole app up considerably. It still looks a bit dour and drab but at least it has a consistant house style. Unlike a few people here I don't think there are better control points for UPnP at the moment but Squeezebox and Apple both have superior apps in IPeng and Remote.
(Mpad/Pod are not bad either)
Playlists and true "shuffle" are essential additions and I hope they will come soon.
Naim are not selling $200 Squeezeboxes and if you sell a premium product expect your customers to demand a premium service. Nothing personal - this is business.

Guys,
Version 2.1 is with Apple for review. There are a few bug fixes for reported bugs with 2.0 but the main change is a performance boost for list browsing. This will really help out people with slower devices such as old iPods but I think you will also notice the difference on the latest iPad.
Playlists editing support is not with us yet but if you have m3u files on your UPnP server you can certainly play then with a Uniti system. As for shuffle, select the item to play then switch on the random function on the now playing screen. So, for example, if you want to shuffle the Ragga genre, press and hold the genre "Ragga" in the list and "Play now". Then switch on random. The Uniti will then walk through the selected genre playing tracks in a random order.
Cheers

Thanks TJ
Quick updates like this do more than anything else to calm furrowed brows and ease audiophile tension
N-Stream is very important to those of us who have decided to take the streaming route either from UnitiServe or UPnP homebrew servers.
Can you keep us up to date as you progress with the next revision - even a dedicated post would help?
