NDX user experience

Posted by: Rich27 on 04 May 2011

I have had my NDX for a week now and apart from a few set up hiccups (mainly my lack of technical ability) the system is sounding better than ever!  What a wonderful piece of kit (replaced a sonos/nDAC combo).

I am using the NDX wireless at the moment and this is stated by Naim to be sub-optimal.  There is no way that I can run a network cable from my router to the lounge so would it be worth setting up some kind of wireless bridge to the NDX (e.g. Netgear WNCE2001)?  At least this would be N not just limited to G (as I believe the NDX is) and would move the nasty wireless bits away from the NDX.

Thoughts appreciated as the only other option would be powerline plugs which I hear introduce all sorts of junk onto the mains.

By the way nStream app is pants, please make this worthy of a £3k piece of kit!

without being at home I cant simply try...... but, can I use nStream with non-Naim Server AND renderer?

Requires UnitiQute, NaimUniti or NDX.

Yeah - love 'em.

Of course that might also mean that the app worked best with UnitiServe - narrowing the market somewhat for streamers that are supposed to be UPnP agnostic.

Hi Tog -

Not sure I see it as narrowing the market, but more just adding some differentiators to make the UnitiServe more attractive to buyers of NDX, Uniqute and future Naim network players.   It's the old fries with your burger sale.

But even if they remain two separate apps, it might make sense for Naim to consider some level of integration.  I keep thinking back to Richard Lord's frustrating experience with having to switch back and forth with selecting the music (nServe) and controlling the volume (nStream).  Could that have been avoided by making the one app more aware of other?  For example, upon selecting an album, could nServe have autolaunched nStream's volume widget?

Oh well, who knows...only thing for sure is that changes are harder for Naim to implement than they are for us to imagine!

"It's begging for a proprietary software package that covers the whole lot, a combination of n-Serve and n-Stream."

That would be PS Audio's TagnPlay, a steal at $10.

Too bad the machine doesn't live up to the software.

I'm using a ReadyNas NV+ and Twonky 6. N Stream runs perfectly smoothly. I didn't really notice any difference with the new N stream.

Tog, can you plug one of these straight in with Twonky already installed, and what do you use to organise your files on it?

Vortexbox is a complete bespoke installation of Fedora 14 and numerous tools needed for a media server. It used to provide an option to install Twonky but MiniDLNA is so stable most no-longer bother. I am now moving my library to a new headless and fanless 2tb low power server but my Sony Vaio based VB has been fantastic. Updates are regular with full Sonos / Squeezebox support built in. I use XLD for file conversion (my other library is Mac based in aiff) and Picard for tagging. VB is easy to organise with drag and drop but Bliss ensures that file paths and cover art are correctly organised. For sheer flexibility in a home with many Macs / IOS devices I just haven't found anything better. If Naim had used it as the basis of their Unitiserve it would have solved a lot of problems. The cost of my new dual drive 2tb silent server I can administer from any browser 25% of the Naim alternative and it tales up half the space. Tog

I feel "System Automation" feature with preamp integration is great on n-Stream.

But am I the only one missing record input selection & (un)mute buttons for Headline hours?
