Tidal next week..

Posted by: Fueller on 29 September 2015

So Tidal has now been announced for Naim Streamers / Muso to the delight of many here I'm sure.

This wasn't a necessity for me but I'd be silly not to take advantage of the 3 month free trial and potentially cancel the spotify sub.

Thoughts?

Have stopped my streaming abo.

I still will keep on to Qobuz out of two reasons:

1. The streaming contract comes with a 30-60% discount on a lot of downloads.

2. I still hope before the first year end that Naim will also add them into the app.

Not in my experience. I did it yesterday and have flac as 44.1 default.

ps sorry just saw your reply Voltaire.

Checked subscription KRM and all is good as payment not due until 2016  Thanks for tip.

I had a look at the quality settings and found it to be set at CD quality by default. Everything working beautifully, bar the odd pause, extended gap between songs, which I can live with for now. Hopefully, this will improve as time goes on.

#1 is nothing I'm using ....... at least in a quantity that is a buisiness.

#2 If it change I cann make a new assessment of the situation.

The Naim app seems to default to CD quality streaming.

"Qobuz doesn't offer" is not a fair phrase.  It takes a partnership among the streaming service, and Naim.  Qobuz can't do it on their own.  Neither can Naim.

Qobuz publish their API to the public so its currently offered to everyone.

err .. Qobuz does offer the possibility of being integrated into naim's eco space, it's down to naim to do the work and make it happen. AuRalic have done, Logitech have done , Linn have done .. Have to say it's a surprise that naim can't get Tidal to play gapless when Linn can! Am really over the moon with my Qobuz subscription, life enhancing and life changing.

+1 The Qobuz API is well documented and easy to gain access to, there is no barrier to integration vs any other popular streaming service.....except Tidal oddly enough, who's API seems very er...private.

There are other considerations beyond the API ease of use: the financial agreement (or lack thereof) but also NAIM's judgement about the future of each one of those services. If nothing else the experience from beta testing clearly shows that a seamless integration like in the case of Tidal is a higher investment compared to a "connect" type integration like with Spotify since the streaming service's application logic needs to be essentially replicated within the NAIM app. I too look forward to Qobuz integration but can understand the cautious approach NAIM is taking .

Tidal wouldn't accept my Singapore Amex card. Finally got it running yesterday using another card.

First impressions, the main thing is the music, and it's a big step above spotify on my Qute/NAP100 but even on my PC with iphone earbuds the difference is marked. More dynamics, blacker background, more natural and musical sounding. Just makes everything more involving.

I prefer the spotify user interfaces but will go with the best sound after the free trial even at double the price, although I do think a price point 50% above the 320k services would make more sense for more people and probably increase Tidal's uptake correspondingly.

On my android phone, the Tidal app is also randomly throwing me back to the Naim app - maybe need to restart after all the installations. Now, I guess this weekend will be spent adding all my favourites to Tidal. Is there any import or transfer function to make this easier?

Yes, but now that Naim have developed the integrated tool set within the Naim app for Tidal, it should be relatively easier to integrate to other services. As seen from Sonos the audio online streaming services generally have a consistent set of methods. Yes each service will have variants, but I feel it should be more a case of parameterization, at least for the core functionality, rather than developing from scratch.

Hi DC71,

I didnt need to transfer any Favourites over from Spotify to Tidal so I cant help you with that, but I did have a couple of Playlists which I wanted to transfer.

I found a really great site that enables users to convert Playlists saved on Qobuz, Spotify amongst others and copy them into Tidal (also the other way round if you like!). (it's called Soundiiz).

As an example I transferred a Playlist I have in Spotify of ca. 40 tracks into Tidal, and with 3 exceptions, the Playlist transferred over in an instant. (37 out of 40 tracks found, the other 3 werent available in Tidal, which I didnt think was a bad result)

Its a good way to check availability of music you like on Tidal as well as to listen to one of your playlists without having to add from scratch.

Hope this helps.

Hi Simon, I haven't seen the Sonos but presume that what you mean is that the "presentation layer" (screens and menus) of the NAIM app will be the same for the next steaming service to be integrated (let's say "Qobuz") with minor adaptations for e.g. images whilst in the backstage the calls to the different API services will effect the integration; so the user interface is basically a "fixed cost" as opposed to the API calls which will be variable cost but relatively less effort consuming. If that's the way that Sonos works then I am with you. In fact the overal business case for NAIM would be based on more than one streaming services to be integrated (so as to faster recover the fixed costs). This is an encouraging thought.

It's Friday evening, the missus is out, the dog is walked and fed, volume is at 50 and Tidal playlists are streaming beautifully in full CD quality, isn't life just grand sometimes

+ toes.  Weird that I keep chiming in on these topics, i don't even own a Naim streamer, or have any plans to.  I suppose I just like Qobuz a lot, want to see them do well, and Naim seems like an ideal partner for their offering and attitude.  They are to me what Apple is to so many; just better.

You might also write your own services to aggregate multiple API calls. For example getAlbum might fetch a track list, fetch the cover art, fetch a unique ID required to pass to the playAlbum call you also write.

Chris,

That Soundiiz site looks really useful, converting some playlist now, thanks for the link. Have seen something not too dissimilar for syncing cycling activities across multiple applications.

Just need an easy way to get my Naim playlists saved on my iPad into TIDAL playlists now, anyone got any ideas?

Thanks
