Tidal next week..

Posted by: Fueller on 29 September 2015

So Tidal has now been announced for Naim Streamers / Muso to the delight of many here I'm sure.

This wasn't a necessity for me but I'd be silly not to take advantage of the 3 month free trial and potentially cancel the spotify sub.

Thoughts?

Ditto here in New Zealand.  Wish they'd hurry up.

If you go to the support page and edit the 4.3 download URL to 4.4 the file is there.

The DSP load for an NDX has changed from v2.55.20 to v2.56.19. Can anyone comment on changes to sonic signature with this release? The 4.3 release was quite significant so I'd like to know I'm not going to be going backwards with this release as I'm not that bothered about Tidal.

I have gone thru the various beta v4.4 & am now on the public release 4.4

Definitely not going backwards - would be interested in your opinion

Also found I can use the 3 months free on an existing Tidal account. Just choose 'Create Account' in the iPad app then apply the code under Subscription of your existing account.

How could TIDAL sound as good as locally sourced files?

If I drive a car 50m or 1000km, which trip is more likely to result in errors or mishaps of some sort.

Frankly I'd be annoyed if CDs I had carefully ripped, stored and streamed sounded no better than a file flung around 4 continents.

I've had a problem updating the new firmware on my ND5 XS. The firmware itself seemed to update without any problem, and also the next stage. But when it got to updating the streamer itself it stopped and then I got a message saying that the firmware was incompatible. It's now asking if I want to retry but I'm not sure, so I'm waiting on Naim Customer Support calling me back. At the moment: no streamer

Retrying shouldn't cause any problems. Ensure that the laptop is connected to the mains and that any power management is switched off to ensure that it doesn't enter sleep mode. Ensure also that the streamer and laptop are connected to the router or switch with a cable (the latter is the official advice - I have never used a wire for the laptop).

Works fine here too, but where did you find that code?

You may  fire up then. If the file is streamed without errors or dropouts it is 16 bit flac file. When I used WiMP the Company that was tkane over and rebranded as Tidal internationally, the streamed flac file sounded very good. Of course I wanted my local files to sound better, but I did not spend a lot of time trying to convince myself what was correct. I streamed my local files or files on my ns01 first, and Things I did not own was streamed from WiMP.

I had some issues with my Squeezebox receiver from time to time it had to be configured, so I dropped out of Tidal. but compared to Apple music wich is clearly much worse than both tidal and Spotify on a Naim streamer, Tidal is the only streaming service I would take up Again.

That is indeed where it should be, but it is not...

That could well be it. I am running El Capitan. Naim Support have just called and are alarmed that people are downloading the firmware before it's officially released. They're going to call back when they've addressed that.

I cannot login to the Tidal account via the Naim app. Login via browser on PC works fine. Anybody else with this problem?

I don't think the transmission distance has bearing on the SQ.  It might introduce latency but the player will use a buffer-cache to play from.  It is surely the quality of the rip that governs the fidelity upon playback.  Bits n bytes shouldn't get lost in TCP networks.  If a packet gets 'lost in the post' its re-sent ensuring the received payload is exactly that which was sent.

Nope, not there on my app either. Still has the "show volume control" under audio settings but no bottom bar volume slider option under other settings. Possibly not showing with system automation enabled?

Hi,

Sorry that you're having update issues - we have tested the updater on El Capitan here and it has been fine.

Retrying is fine ... but if the update still fails then can you please contact us for support directly as per the sticky at the top of the forum and then perhaps we can identify what is happening in your instance? (support@naimaudio.com)

Please give details of what device you are trying to update, what firmware it is on already, how it is connected to your network (wired, WiFi, Ethernet Over Mains etc.).

Thanks

Phil

If you are using System Automation to control a preamp then you will only get "-/+" volume control and not a slider...

No volume slider for me either. I don't have system automation, and have not done firmware update yet. under other settings, I don't have audio options, should I?

Posted on: 06 October 2015 by Jumping Jack

Thank you for making that clear Phil!

It took some waiting, but I'm very pleased with the new update .

...and what are you controlling?

You will not get a volume slider with just an ND5XS / NDX / NDS as it is not a volume controlled unit.

You will get Volume - / Volume + buttons if you are using system automation with a preamp (202 / 282 / 252 / 552 etc.).

You will get a volume slider (to allow direct volume setting) with Uniti, Mu-so or NAC-N series products.

Best

Sorry Phil, I have ndx with 82 pre, so I now understand that I will not have any type of volume control?

Not unless you use system automation to control the 82 pre and then it will be Vol - / Vol +...
