Tidal next week..
Posted by: Fueller on 29 September 2015
So Tidal has now been announced for Naim Streamers / Muso to the delight of many here I'm sure.
This wasn't a necessity for me but I'd be silly not to take advantage of the 3 month free trial and potentially cancel the spotify sub.
Thoughts?

@Nick
Well, there's nothing like giving things a fair crack, is there?
+1
272 updated without a hitch. I'd had some drop out issues (with Tidal) in last test version but now solid as a rock.
I was very late to join the beta test team and had no meaningful input as all the issues had pretty much been resolved. I think the Naim team and our more expert forum members / beta testers have done a great job.
Whether you like tidal or not (I am warming to it rapidly), it is very nicely baked into the Naim app and the seamless playback between UPNP and Tidal tracks when you start to build longer queues of music is absolutely fantastic.
We all have requests for other music services to be included and I'm sure in time they will come, if they are all integrated with the same attention to detail and ease of use as Tidal has been, then I will continue to be one very happy user.
Thanks for making what was already a great product (the 272) even better.
Excellent instructions. Worked perfectly. Well done Naim for that....but
Why did I have to do a Factory Reset at the end? Lost all my radio stations and wasted half an hour re-storing them. PITA
Listening to this Tidal thing now. Sound no better than average and not as good as BBC R3 (£145pa for EVERYTHING, except the cricket and the golf these days, but too much for Cameron and his mates as it dares to criticize them sometimes!) and not a patch on the wonderful free Audiophiles Classical and Baroque. I'll listen some more, but I'm not sure it's worth nearly £250 pa. Might be OK in the car I suppose but there are free radio stations which would be as good
Still Jay-Z, Beyonce and the others need the money I guess and it's our duty to give it to them - again!
Very early on in this thread I questioned the wisdom of going for Tidal as the first Naim 16 bit quality streaming service due to all the bad press about Tidal swirling around but did also hope it would be successful.
Well I have updated my NDS and am very, very impressed. Thinking this was too good to be true I set Tidal a real test by searching for some the 70's and 80's crappy Jazz Funk stuff I used to love as a student back in the day. It pretty well found it all to my astonishment and it sounds flipping great!
Will do some more testing of the Tidal catalog but l'm a bit busy dancing around like a big kid at the moment.
Well done Naim - absolutely love what you have done integrating Tidal and let's hope Tidal ( and others) make it through the inevitable growing pains a (relatively) new and growing service will encounter.
It seems that I will not benefit from the free of charge period. First when I launched Tidal I logged as normally on my account – so no new account creation. Unfortunately I am an old Wimp customer and my payments go as if from Wimp account. Even if I log into my Tidal account – the subscription is seen on Wimp account. Any ideas how to benefit in such a situation?
Sounds like I'll soon be retiring my AirportExpress > w4s remedy stop gap now that Tidal is integrated. Anyone tried Tidal with the ND5XS yet?
OK that was easy. 20 minutes tops for my 172xs, and I'm now listening to Julia Holter's new album on Tidal very happily. And the app integration is excellent.
hahah funny thing: I'm also checking Tidal with Julia's new record. My frist choice

A faultless update on my ND5XS. Really impressed with the integration with the app, great work by Naim programmers and beta testers.
Sound wise is good for a streaming service. I was using my Squeeze Box Touch with Qobuz into my ND5XS so I compared a CD rip against the new Tidal app and Qobuz. The track was Gabriel's Oboe The Mission OST track 13. No surprise the rip had the greatest range, Qobuz had the range but was a bit fatiguing in presence. Tidal didn't have the same range as the rip, slightly flatter. For songs/albums I don't own Tidal is perfect, if you compare yes there are differences but on the whole the sound is similar to a rip.
For me having an online streaming service, radio, network music all controlled seamless by one app is great. Jumping between apps though not difficult, was a pain.
I will keep Qobuz till my subscription is due. Though I will still download Hi Res albums from them.
Back to listening....

Thanks Robd67. SOLD!
Thanks naim / Phil
my NDS is sounding great and I am rediscovering all the stuff I have in the loft on worn out vinyl
Mike Oldfield - must have allowed some better stuff to be uploaded?
just need to retire 15 years early and have time to listen
Well that was probably the shortest subscription to the service. I don't really like these streaming services, especially when presented with playlists that mean less than nothing to me (FIFA and the Papal Visit 2015, FFS!).
Subscription cancelled.
Over-hyped and over here.

I had a Tidal account (all be it still in free trial period) - I created a new account (with alternative email address) from within the app and when you hit the redeem button it takes you through to creating an account on the Tidal website and the 90 day free trial is automatically applied. Although this was not clear as you went through account setup - I checked subscription status and it confirmed the first payment would be taken in January.
Obviously I have now closed down my original (30 day) free trial account in order to not be charged for that next month.
Having been one of those on the naughty step from this morning I have now downloaded and updated again and seem to have Qobuz and Deezer Elite as well as TIDAL on my NDS. Is this something to do with this mornings illicit file?
Wow, really? I've got pound coins pouring of my 272's USB socket.
I've got old pence coming from mine. I must have done something wrong.
I have upgraded the ND5XS. It was a painless exercise.
The Tidal integration is really nicely executed within the Naim App. I'm very pleased with it. As more have said so, being able to mix Tidal songs and songs from your NAS in the playlist is a really nice touch.
Soundwise, Tidal is far better than Spotify or Apple Music due to the 44.1Khz FLAC stream, but my own rips (ALAC) sound all better. It is good enough though.
For classical music, searching is a disaster. That's not to blame on Tidal, the support for tagging classical music and the incoherent way record companies tag their music publications is a swamp.
All in all, I'm very pleased with the way it works. If other streaming services would be integrated the same way, you would not hear me complain. If you do not like it, you can just hide the input channels in your app.
Well done Naim!
I'm going to update my devices soon. Quick question though. Does it matter which device I set up the subscription on? It is completely streamer independent yes?
The subscription is with Tidal, but through Naim you get a coupon for a three month free subscription. This is not tied to a device.

Thanks
I have managed to up date my SU to 4.04 and I see that there is a Tidal 'button' on my iPad, but when I press it goes to an inactive 'Tribal' page in the Naim app.
So near......
I have no Tidal account, so what do I do now? and how do I get a coupon for the 3 month trail?
I would be grateful for your help! I feel a bit deflated.
Have you loaded the newest 4.6 app? If you have, go to input settings, click Tidal then go to login. That will take to to a page to get the three month trial.
Hi Hungryhalibut, no I havent, I'll have a look now, thank you
Let us know how you get on.
Ok I think!
I updated the app and found the redemption code, clicking on redeem seemed to move the process on. no confirmation of commencement of 90 day trial though

It is not clear that the 90 free trial has been applied, I had to go into account settings - subscription and there it tells you next payment is due in January.

Me also. Particularly confusing as you are asked to confirm a payment method during the sign-up.

Thank you Harty601, following your suggestion does indeed indicate that I was successful in activating the 90day offer. Payment due in Jan 2016
Feels like quite an achievement for a crusty old git like me.
This thread has been a great help, cheers all.
