Tidal for HDX NS01 etc

Posted by: 2roomsor1 on 01 October 2015

Does anyone know if it's happening. Or do I need to buy a NDX or the like to stream

I bought the HDX as one of its selling points was it could be upgraded to provide more functionality. Hopefully upgrade does not mean trade in

I have a feeling its brace yourself time,  I wouldn't be surprised if the old tech models like NS01, HDX & US don't have the capable hardware.  It time for Naim to make it 100% clear what models have the potential (or not) for streaming & also while they are at it what are the 24-bit sample rate limits;  then with that made clear both the existing & potential new owners can make informed decisions.

Mike - not sure about NS01 - but I see no reason why the HDX and US couldn't support network streaming. I am sure its a case of economics and development time. We might see a call for US and HDX beta testers once the current wave of developments is somewhat out of the way. But then again... but I cant see there is a hardware limitation - not least because these devices have an Ethernet port and TCP stack -

Same here, I wonder if Naim will continue to develop their servers... Would be really a pity if this type of updates wille be available for the servers only ... I love the simplicity of the two-box system I currently own with a HDX and SuperNait and therefore will NOT add an additional box for streaming functionality only ...

As per Phil Harris' reply:

"The UnitiServe / HDX / NS0x are rippers / servers / hard disc players and therefore we will not be adding Spotify to the UnitiServe / HDX / NS0x in the same way that we will not be adding ripping to the Uniti / UnitiLite - the functionality isn't appropriate to the product."

I was already afraid to hear that ...

Picking up on the 'not appropriate to the product' comment. The HDX does have internet radio, so it's not that big a jump to Tidal

What if the HDX logged into Tidal and served out to NDX etc

Or is it time for a Sooloos

My NS01 also has internet radio.

Or maybe a switch to Linn...

I've reconciled myself to the fact it won't happen.

If nothing is forthcoming - for what it cost - it's a poor show in my opinion.

My plan is to keep the machine (an HDX) and carry on buying discs and downloads.

At least it does sound good!

Not sure what "the UnitiServe / HDX / NS0x are rippers / servers / hard disc players"  has to do with adding the desired services?  If what the customers want "isn't appropriate for the products",  then maybe the customer should look elsewhere!

Right, I think that is the most sensible thing to do :-)

When I bought my ns01 in 2011  it had the right set of features,  knowing that internet radio would be added in 2011. However 2 years back there were no upnp support, as I remember it no backup to nas, and no internet radio, so the servers did evolve dramatically over the first 4 years. Personally I would not buy or advice others to go for a ns01 or hdx now, unless they really knew that the feature sets of the servers seem to be what we can expect. If new users are  fine with that no problem.

For me the ns01 plus Ndac makes it possible for me to add a streaming device to my setup for a resonable Price, and this was one of my reasons not to go for the hdx instead  of ns01 plus Ndac.

Like you I use mine with a Supernait. It's a nice combination.

I've been a customer for about 14 years and will probably continue for many more but the lack of a coherent explanation as to why streaming will not be implemented has somewhat worn my loyalty a bit thin. I'm not sure if Naim is better or worse than the competition in protecting a customers investment.

Claus / John,

Like you I am disappointed by the Naim perceived lack of support for their server solutions. I see no reason for them NOT to incorporate streaming services onto these boxes, beyond the required investment. If they were to include this then I would look to continue with my NS01, as it is when it hits a bump in the road I will probably just look to buy an independent streamer.
