Digital out from Note5 to ND5XS via USB-OTG

Posted by: dzambolaja on 02 October 2015

I am trying to get the digital signal out from Samsung Note5 mobile to ND5XS using the OSB OTG cable.

No success so far - Note5 "does not see external audio device"...

Has anyone managed yet to get the digital audio out from their mobile into ND5XS (or SU, UQ, U, etc.) using the USB on-the-go cable?

Would this arrangement work at all?

The ND5 XS digital inputs are S/Pdif not USB.

You need a USB to S/Pdif interface box to make that work.

I used the front side USB.  It should work with a USB stick or an iPod digital out?

How is your note5 formatted? From memory disc needs to be in FAT32 format to be accessible.

These two post are contradictory; which of these are you trying to achieve:

1   Get a digital audio signal from the Note5 to the ND5 XS

2   Use the ND5 XS to read audio files stored on the Note5

They are not the same thing

I am trying to run Note5 in the host mode and push the digital out to ND5

That won't work without using a USB to S/Pdif converter, as the USB on the ND5 is host mode only:  It's designed to read USB Mass Storage devices (and to control some apple devices) only.

With a USB to S/Pdif converter you connect the output from the converter (typically an RCA Phono connector) to one of the digital inputs on the back of the ND5.

It may be possible to effectively do it the other way round using this approach:

Set the USB of the Note5 into USB Mass Storage mode (not Host mode).

As a test, use the Naim remote control on the ND5 to test to see if the ND5 can navigate the folder structure of the Note and read and play the audio files.

If it can play them when using the Naim remote to control the ND5, install the Naim app on the Note, then use that to navigate the files.

Problem solved, but in a different way!

Good idea, I will try that.  Thanks Huge.

I was really trying to test the Note5 in host mode and ND5 in slave/passive mode, using the stock Android app to play hidef songs on ND5 as it can be done with many simple external speakers with USB digital input.  I did not know that ND5 works only in host mode.

thanks
