What's the new DAC benefits?
Posted by: AussieSteve on 02 October 2015
I believe Naim are about to release a new DAC. What improvements will they make over the old one, and how might it compare with Hugo? Any suggestions welcome, I am still playing with the upgrade idea ie NDX/DAC or NDX/XPS/DAC OR NDS/555. Yes money matters, so best sound for money is important, and rack space is an issue. That said I am fond of the idea of all Naim.
Word on the street is it now has a blue light, and makes the Yugo "unlistenable."
17.3% more PRaT than Yugo.
"So, what you're telling me, Percy, is that something you have never seen is slightly less blue than something else you have never seen?"
Watt, tutt tutt, rounding errors old boy, it is more 1.467 dBPRaTYugo
It's actually very easy to improve on a Hugo. You just replace it with a Hugo TT like the one that I got my hands on yesterday ... ![]()
I believe Naim are about to release a new DAC.
Where did you get this information from? What more can you tell us? Price? Release date?
I can make plenty of predictions nased on something which doesn't presently exist but the "Stone of Galveston" monologue covers it perfectly.

'makes the Yugo sound broken', surely?
Maybe OP getting mixed up with new firmware release?

I forecast that 17.3% of prats will believe that everything that came before is now broken.

Didn't think of that. Could be. Good call.
This follows the belief that if the rumor is persistent enough it will become reality...... So now let's talk about the real thing.
I have heard that the ND555 will soon come out. It will also have an extreme ps option called the PS777 and it will make owners of all other sources cry as it makes them sound so broken. Following the modern concept it will be priced at cost and people will be able to pay more if they are happy with it.
The he device will not be sold in the coming years however to owners of a Hugo, unless they in this forum announce that they where following the wrong prophet.......
ps tip, sell your current source before it becomes worthless.
...or buy a turntable.

Have you tried NDX/nDAC/XPS? General consensus is PS on nDAC gives better results. Albeit some have found they prefer it on the NDX when feeding the nDAC.
You people are strange! I have been told by a dealer testing has begun on a DAC, and that was my premise. I know the weather in the UK is bad, but so is the humour. Hugo fanatics are tiresome, I might add.

Beta testing has begun on new DAC firm/software ........
Talking of weather & something far far more important than DAC's, I am really hoping it rains on the Wallabies tonite, nothing personal Steve .......... ![]()
Aussie Steve - what you're failing to understand is that even amongst Naim users there is a small contingent that yearn for something to coin a horrid modern expression - bling. Hence their obsession with Hugo and heaven forbid Dave. Okay sounding hifi for chavs.

Ps what's all this about a DAC software update. What's new?

The software update is in beta testing and I've signed an NDA, breach of which results in banning from the forum for a year, followed by three weeks of forum personality training by Adam.
But if you've been following the news on the latest streamer SW update, you can take an educated guess.
Also, the SW update substantially XXXXXXXXXX the sound of the DAC, You can really XXXXXXXX when the XXXX XXXX ! Oh, and the rear USB port still sounds better.

There is some dBPrat gain though.
Here's the skinny on the nDAC update:
First of all <redacted> so yeah, its a good upgrade.
But seriously, it has improved the sound quality. It's even easier now to get lost in the music. nDAC owners, you're in for a treat.

Both you and your wife play rugby?
"So, what you're telling me, Percy, is that something you have never seen is slightly less blue than something else you have never seen?"
Percy: You know, they do say that the Infanta's eyes are more beautiful than the famous Stone of Galveston.
Edmund: Mm! ... What?
Percy: The famous Stone of Galveston, My Lord.
Edmund: And what's that, exactly?
Percy: Well, it's a famous blue stone, and it comes ... from Galveston.
Edmund: I see. And what about it?
Percy: Well, My Lord, the Infanta's eyes are bluer than it, for a start.
Edmund: I see. And have you ever seen this stone?
Percy: (nods) No, not as such, My Lord, but I know a couple of people who have, and they say it's very very blue indeed.
Edmund: And have these people seen the Infanta's eyes?
Percy: No, I shouldn't think so, My Lord.
Edmund: And neither have you, presumably.
Percy: No, My Lord.
Edmund: So, what you're telling me, Percy, is that something you have never seen is slightly less blue than something else you have never seen.
Percy: (finally begins to grasp) Yes, My Lord.
