A Look inside the Leak Trough Line 3 Tuner.

Posted by: George F on 04 October 2015

As my two old L:eak tuners have developed faults, I decided to prepare the better one for servicing by sprucing it up a bit and taking some photos while I was about it.

I would never open a Naim box these days as all of them have micro-chips in which can easily be zapped to death by static electricity, but the old Trough Line is made of sterner stuff!

Enjoy the old style making that was World class fifty years ago.

Yes, I like that.  The components look reassuringly substantial.  I'm afraid I know nothing of the product in question, but I can see why you would share this.

This is my youth...

The Leak Troughline tuners were iconic back in the day.  It's good to know someone loves them still.

Can anyone spot the seven valves involved!

I can only see six I'm afraid! Where's it hiding?

I can see 7 valves, one of them, most likely the RF oscillator stage is shielded and lies between two RF transformers.

Is that the one at the bottom right, next to the dead spider?

Well done.

Six obvious one and one shielded!

Don't mock the spiders. They were an important part of the "Je ne sais quoi" in those days. It all went wrong when transistor tuners came along.  They ran cool and the spiders stayed away!

Ah yes I can see the pip in the glassware now. Very interesting, takes me back to youth when televisions smelled of hot ozone and burnt dead skin cells

When I get a Leak 12.1 power amp [mono 12 Watts, point one per cent distortion, and not bad for to plus decades after release in 1948] I'll keep the spiders even happier. I rather like spiders. They have their place, and I seem to be able to rear ones a good two inches across here. They are fearless as well!

Arachnophobes should steer clear!
