Never been keen on 'Desire', that wretched violin!

Now 'Planet Waves', there's an album worthy of reassessment.

For me it would be 'Infidels' on an all AAA pressing at 45 rpm.

Funny how different the taste can be - for me the key of this album is the violin. And of course there is the story of the hurricane …

"Now all the criminals in their coats and their ties
Are free to drink martinis and watch the sun rise
While Rubin sits like Buddha in a ten-foot cell
An innocent man in a living hell."

The download of Desire from Highresaudio took nearly 3 hours, even using their downloader. The good  news is that is it sounds very much better than the WAV rip of the 2003 remastered hybrid CD.

Sorry to 'nudge' this topic, but today I bought New Morning, and it is really outstanding, compared to any previous version I have heard.

I have no Bob Dylan which is most probably a shame. Should I start with Desire or what is the best album to start off with ?

Posted on: 18 October 2015 by David O'Higgins

Oh Bert, what a question! The first one I bought was Freewheelin, but that's 50 years ago now! I really hesitate to recommend for fear of putting you off. Nevertheless, I have an abiding memory of watching a live appearance on BBC 'Top of the Pops' in 1965 when he sang 'Like a Rolling Stone' from the Highway 61 album, which would be a good place to start. Or you could try 'Hurricane' from 'Desire' which I am listening to now in attempt to blot out the Rugby!!

It was Blood on the Tracks that first got me started on Dylan, and led to purchase of 60 or so of his albums and one of the drawn blank paintings!

First record for me too. But apart from Desire, my Dylan collection only goes backwards in time from there.

Try moving it forward with 'Love and Theft'. Some unbelievable poetry!!

Moving forward from Blood on the tracks I would also give Infidels a go. Some really good stuff, and some mediocrity too, but overall I  enjoy it.

Just listened to this, not something to always listen to for me - but definitely good...

Wierd, I was coincidentally listening to Blood on the Tracks when I opened this thread.  Actually is my personal favourite Dylan album,

If you can put up with 45rpm vinyl the MOFI reissues of the early Dylan albums are excellent.

Agree Steve. Greatest hits released last week and waiting for my copy

I was only 13! All of the 24 bit downloads are highly recommended (by me!), including The Freewheelin
