Volume control on Naim app home screen
Posted by: hungryhalibut on 09 October 2015
I visited my dealer today, and amongst other things he mentioned how pleased he was to finally have the volume slider on the app home screen. Really? said I. I wonder how I missed it, and how long it's been there? I know people will say 'and Queen Victoria has died too' but I thought it worth posting in case others had missed it. You activate it under Other Settings, if you want to do it. I'm already finding it very useful.
Its not on all models, the N series is unchanged with -/+
I think it arrived with the release of version 4.6 of the IOS App, but it's been on the betas since I joined that programme a couple of weeks back.
The N series streamers don't show the volume control on the IOS App at all unless you have System Automation connected, in which case I had supposed it would behave the same way as the Uniti streamers, but perhaps I'm wrong about that?
I am am quite interested in this because my sitting room system is an ND5XS into Quad 99/909 equipment and I am trying to decide what to do so that I can get the volume control in the App to work in the sitting room too, which will probably involve replacing some or all of the Quad with Naim.
Yup the volume control can be enabled to be on all the time (that is, on the home screen) for my Qute, but not for my NDS.
I'm not sure why there is such a distinction . . . but there is. (I'm guessing that underneath they are coded a little differently . . . but would hope that the N-series steamers could get this feature activated. And I do prefer the slider to the + and - buttons.)
Reading the reference manual for the NDX and ND5 -XS (it's the same manual) it says in there words to the effect that you can vary the volume if the streamer is connected by a 3.5mm to 3.5mm jack lead to the preamp. I assumed that this is because the volume control circuitry is in the preamp and the 3.5mm jack lead is just connecting up all the remote control functionality.
but that begs the question what does the App do in a NAC N-272 streamer? Does it show a slider volume control or the +/- buttons?
Clearly it's just me who missed this. As I thought, dopey.
It's a slider on the 272.
It's a slider on the 272.
Hmm one of my options is to trade my NX5-XS up to a 272 and use that to drive my Quad 909 power amp until I can afford to swap that for a NAP 200 or 250DR.
But another option I have been playing with the idea of is to keep the ND5-XS and add a SuperNait 2, which would cost a similar amount to option one in the short term but less in the longer term.
Does anyone know what the ND5-XS/SuperNait 2 combo shows by way of volume control in the new IOS App? (Or I may have to go and talk to my dealer!).

You are not alone .............
According to Mike above, it's a +/-, though that seems a strange basis on which to choose a system.....
I agree it isn't a basis to choose a system, but as one the main things I want to do is to be able to control it from my IOS App like I do my other streamers, it could be a strong indicator against any system option that didn't do that so well.
Cor, that's good. Long overdue and very welcome.
How do you enable it on the NDS?
Oh.
Right.
ND5 is same as NDX & its - || + (a mute button in the middle)
System Automation enabled & a 3.5/3.5mm jack lead controls the motorised volume on SN (1 & 2)
Thanks Mike
That's somewhat depressingly what I thought it might be from your earlier posting. I'm still kind of attracted to the SN2 option, all the same.......

The +\- volume control on the ND streamers is only available on the "Now Playing" and "Play Queue" screens. Unfortunately, you cannot adjust the volume via the app whilst opening the Rovi booklet or browsing your music library.

This is still the case with the new 4.6 version of the IOS App?

Yes, afraid so.
Hmm. Thanks for the information anyway!

I'd missed that too. Thanks for posting!
Isn't this because the volume control is more digitally controlled with the 272. The NACs use a traditional analogue motorized potentiometer arrangement and the Naim automation sub system just signals up or down with no feedback mechanism for the actual pot position. Therefore one can only realistically have a plus or minus button, as opposed to an absolute volume control as with the 272.

Correct!
I can understand why there is no volume slider control in the app for the ND streamers but this does not explain why the volume up/down (+\-) control does not appear on the bottom bar when browsing the music library or opening the Rovi booklet.
It would be much more convenient to be able to adjust the volume level without having to exit browsing the music library even if the "Play Queue" screen is just one click of the bottom bar away.
Really glad about this working on the Muso, as it was a bit frustrating when changing radio stations.
When i used to change station, i would open the "currently playing" screen and then when the buffer had filled it would drop out to the preset screen where there was no volume control!

Thanks very much both for this explanation and confirmation.

+1
this does strike me as worth a look if the team have some time one day.

It was available in nStream so it's a matter of restoring the functionality of the app to something approaching what it was two years ago. It's a basic requirement and its omission is piss poor.
It's there now. Here is a screen shot of browsing the server while listening to Radio 3.
Two screen shots even - bloomin' iPad.
