Volume control on Naim app home screen

Posted by: hungryhalibut on 09 October 2015

I visited my dealer today, and amongst other things he mentioned how pleased he was to finally have the volume slider on the app home screen. Really? said I. I wonder how I missed it, and how long it's been there? I know people will say 'and Queen Victoria has died too' but I thought it worth posting in case others had missed it. You activate it under Other Settings, if you want to do it. I'm already finding it very useful.

I'm more than happy with the - || + on NDX.

And because the pre-amp volume control is a simple on/off motorised unit I cannot see how it would be possible to regulate its position to a fixed slider position.

The + and - buttons as appear when the bottom pop up bar is tapped, just need to go on the front of the app. Same as they did in nStream and as the slider now does for some devices.

Glad you mentioned this, HH, it reminded me to turn this back on in settings as it vanished on the latest iOS app update. Frankly, I don't know why it wouldn't be turned on by default.

HH,

The volume slider may appear in the app when browsing with your NAC N272 but there is no volume control at all on the bottom bar in the browsing view on the app for the ND series streamers only the I< II >I controls at the bottom right hand corner of the screen.

There seems to be some confusion about what is being asked for. As mentioned previously, I understand that the ND streamers can't support the slider volume control but that should not prevent the +/- volume control being accessed on the bottom bar whilst browsing the library.

Are you sure you have it enabled? Have a look under 'other settings' on the front page of the app.

Posted on: 10 October 2015 by sjbabbey

Yes, I'm sure as I've had it enabled since setting up Sysyem Automation and also because the +/- volume control appears on the bottom bar of the app on the "Play Queue" and "Now Playing" screens.

Posted on: 10 October 2015 by hungryhalibut

I'd suggest that it isn't.......

Posted on: 10 October 2015 by sjbabbey

I see.

There is no such option in "Other Settings" in the app for the ND series (and yes I have updated to the latest version of the app). Instead the "enable volume control" option is found in Settings>Audio Settings and I have enabled it.

The option you've referred to is not available for the ND streamers which is the point I'm making.

Ah, I see. That's a bit rubbish.

Agreed. It is a nuisance since it seems an easy thing to put right.

Posted on: 10 October 2015 by hungryhalibut

I don't disagree. Since being told about it only yesterday, I'm finding it very useful. Like you, I don't see why the +/- can't be made to show all the time. In fact, I'd like the mute button there all the time as well.

Close. It's a lot rubbish.

I'm sure it's being worked on.

Having the mute function would not only be welcome, it would in fact push the app back to nStream specification!

Hm,

Looking at the screenshot(s) posted by HH, I see that the slider control takes up about three quarters of the total width of the bottom bar leaving only about one sixth of it blank to the right hand corner to cram in  the change track and pause controls for the ND streamers.

Is this simply an issue of the poor allocation of the available space on the bottom bar? Seems daft if it is.

I thought some peeps were asking for  slider in the "N" units

But it would handy to have the +/- available on all the screens when music is playing,  not sure why you would want it when browsing.

Simples, I browse the music library to queue up albums while music is playing.

Me too,  but I've already set the volume, I don't need to change it while browsing.

...........   Turn it down, I can't hear myself read

Whatever,  a volume control on more or all the screens would be better

I'm glad you agree.

Therefore one can only realistically have a plus or minus button, as opposed to an absolute volume control as with the 272.

Correct!

Yes this all makes sense, as you can keep pressing the - button when the volume control is at minimum, and it keeps trying to go lower . . . no feedback look as Simon wrote . . . no absolute volume being able to be discerned or displayed, just the ability to run the volume control motor in each direction.

It could still be put on the screen all the time, and/or enabled with the iPhone's hardware buttons, I guess/hope/pray.

I think you'll be praying a long time for anything on the hardware button(s). What would be kind of nice for us ND5, NDX and NDS owners would be to have some basic app functionally like a volume plus mute function live and accessible from anywhere in the app. After all, we had it two years ago in nStream. Why the going backwards?

Just to be clear...

On the latest app you can have the volume slider shown in the bottom bar as well as on the "Now Playing" screen.

The volume slider is *ONLY* applicable to the Uniti, Mu-so and NAC-N products that have directly acessible electronic volume controls, not to our Systep Automation control of analogue preamps and integrated amps. They have "-/+" volume controls which cannot be slider operated. In that case the slider will not be displayed in the bottom bar.

Cheers

Phil,

I think it is readily accepted that the app cannot display the volume slider for the ND series streamers.

The issue in debate is that the +/- and mute volume controls for the ND streamers can only be accessed whilst in the Play Queue and Now Playing screens i.e. they are not available on the main home/browsing screens or when the Rovi booklet is open.

I spoke with the software guys about this a while ago and they say that the bottom bar isn't big enough to allow volume up / volume down buttons (whereas the slider can be quite small) and we're not allowed by Apple to hijack the volume up / down hard buttons...

This facility was available and worked perfectly when the app was known as nStream.  It didn't look so slick as it does now, but I can't believe that Naim of all people would sacrifice functionality for appearance.

The solution must be in development. How can a £20K streaming source be a hair shirt?

The permanent volume control in n-Stream was removed in the Naim app because it didn't always work correctly - in instances where lists were being populated then the volume control could be very laggy and result in large volume changes.

Phil, the slider control seems to take up about three quarters of the width of the bottom bar so it is not "very small". For the ND series the bottom bar on the main page has a large blank area in the middle where the slider would be. I suspect that this is solely for cosmetic/design reasons i.e. the slider bar could be made smaller leaving a blank field between its RHS and the navigation/pause control to allow an area for the +/- and mute controls for the ND series streamers.
