Volume control on Naim app home screen
Posted by: hungryhalibut on 09 October 2015
I visited my dealer today, and amongst other things he mentioned how pleased he was to finally have the volume slider on the app home screen. Really? said I. I wonder how I missed it, and how long it's been there? I know people will say 'and Queen Victoria has died too' but I thought it worth posting in case others had missed it. You activate it under Other Settings, if you want to do it. I'm already finding it very useful.
I have faith Phil. Possibly misplaced but I choose to think not. Linn can do it, Sonus can do it, Apple can do it.... I'll be patient.
The permanent volume control in n-Stream was removed in the Naim app because it didn't always work correctly - in instances where lists were being populated then the volume control could be very laggy and result in large volume changes.
Phil
Thanks Phil, that now finally makes sense to me. Knowing how the software would have to be implemented, some degree of lag is almost inevitable - and not necessarily controllable by the app on different devices.
Actually I don't mind not having them accessible from the browsing and set-up pages, when I want to control what's currently playing it seems natural to me to switch to the current playlist page!
What I would really like to see is the ability to display a folder picture at each level of the UPnP navigation tree; however I acknowledge that you're limited by what is presented by the UPnP server for this, so it's futile asking for it!
Phil,
I think it is readily accepted that the app cannot display the volume slider for the ND series streamers.
The issue in debate is that the +/- and mute volume controls for the ND streamers can only be accessed whilst in the Play Queue and Now Playing screens i.e. they are not available on the main home/browsing screens or when the Rovi booklet is open.
I spoke with the software guys about this a while ago and they say that the bottom bar isn't big enough to allow volume up / volume down buttons (whereas the slider can be quite small) and we're not allowed by Apple to hijack the volume up / down hard buttons...
Phil
Typical Apple.
Actually you wouldn't need to hijack the volume control, just read the events and send the resultant state (for Uniti and NAC-N devices) or an event message (for ND... devices).
I can see that, while at it's current vertical size, the bottom bar is a bit too small vertically to encompass volume + || - buttons (for ND... series streamers), however they could be placed at the right hand end of the bar.
Hi, just reading through all the posts but still can't see an answer:-
Since upgrading to 4.6 on my iPhone 6 the volume controls have gone. There is no slider, + or - and no option to activate volume within the input settings or other settings. There are no audio settings. When switching to Mu-so the volume bar is visible. Any help is greatly appreciated.
I am using NDX (upgraded to 4.4), 282/250.2
Cheers
Chris
ND series streamers don't have this facility. Extremely disappointing but there you go. They used to have it in nStream but it seems that less is more and "progress" is not without sacrifice.
However, are you saying that in addition you cannot see the +/- volume control for the NDX when you tap on the bottom bar to bring up the full track info display? If so, it's wrong and if reinstalling the app, restarting everything and making sure the appropriate settings are selected doesn't work, an inquiry to technical support looks in order.

Hi Harry,
It has never been possible to have a volume slider with "ND" series products and system automation - even in the old n-Stream - because the preamps that System Automation work with don't support direct volume control setting, only Volume Up / Volume Down.
The Volume Slider is *ONLY* applicable to Mu-so, Uniti and NAC-N products which have a rotary encoder or electronic type volume control.
Cheers
Phil
I'm referring to any kind of volume control for ND streamers Phil, as alluded to by the poster who mentioned the +/- method and his NDX. This was ubiquitously available in nStream and has been deleted from the current streaming app. Sure, you can get to it by drilling down if you have an ND product, and for those occasions where you need a volume control from anywhere in the app the remote control will suffice. I always keep my remote next to my iPad - or at least I do since Naim downgraded nStream to the current app.

With something playing, touch the bottom bar on any screen (except set-up pages), this will take you to the "Play Queue" screen that shows the current playlist or the current input to the NDX. The + / - buttons are on this screen.

Harry,
Phil has already provided a good reason why this had to be done...

It sounds like you need to activate system automation.
It'd be very useful to me, and alternatives like bubble can do it.

Really?
How many nStream users experienced significant difficulties with this feature? It could lag a little bit from time to time, just like the current pop up volume facility can do - occasionally.
It seems that it had to be done because Naim didn't know how to do something which other makers can apparently do with ease.
Sorry. That's not good enough.

It sounds like you need to activate system automation.
Thanks guys, after doing the firmware upgrade I did a factory reset as per the instructions which then reset the system automation to NO. Re-enabled for the streamer and the volume control has now re-appeared. Thanks again.

There is a 'show volume control' setting in the Naim App that can get reset to "off" when you update. But the only time this will do anything is if you tether your NDX to a compatible Naim preamp or integrated amp and enable it in the NDX's setup menu.

I realise that no explanation will convince you, however in case others may be persuaded that Naim are just being difficult or incompetent...
I have experienced the lag causing a threat to speakers (and neighbour relations) by increasing the volume far more than expected.
At the time, my experience as a software and hardware systems designer allowed me to identify the most probable reasons why the problem occurred. I then thought about solutions. All the solutions I could find had potential consequences: some that could reduce sound quality some that reduce user convenience in the UI. I realised that the only available solution with no impacts outside the UI, was to limit the use of the volume control in the UI app (there are several ways to achieve this).
It is encouraging to see a discussion from a technical POV that swings towards a solution focused approach rather than being problem orientated. I am sure that Naim are looking at ways of filling the gap. Introducing a suggestion that Naim are "difficult or incompetent" is in my view exceedingly harsh of you and unfair to Naim. But you are of course entitled to your opinion.

Harry,
Sorry, I should have been clearer, I left open a possible misunderstanding...
I'm trying to show to others that Naim are NOT being difficult or incompetent; and assure them that the volume control changes to the app had to be made for good engineering reasons.
Good. I'm glad that's established. Something that we can all wholeheartedly agree on.
