Suggestions Box for Naim R & D

Posted by: Disposable hero on 09 October 2015

At a branch of Nando’s there was a 'Suggestions Box' in which they welcome your feedback, and the thought occurred that Naim could also have a suggestions box somewhere.

For this is it possible for Naim R & D to consider the following?

Next generation of integrated amplifiers, Nait Demi-size

Nothing to do with an actress, this is for the next incarnation of Naim integrated amplifiers to become compact cased, as was one of the previous versions of Nait, (2 or 3?).  The benefits are clear for all, in manufacturing less materials are used, packaging reduced, lower volumetric weight for distribution or shipping so more environmentally conscious – hippies & tree-huggers rejoice.  For the end user the smaller units are more easily accommodated in a system and its shelving, leaving room for side-by-side pairing with other components. Ideally this could be a future version of a network player like a compact/ shoebox size ND5 XS .  The future is miniaturisation and if able to achieve the same outstanding Naim sound it would be great to see these compact versions of future amplifiers and also network players or streamers.

The NAP 100 toroid takes up nearly half the room in a shoebox case power amp, not sure there would be room for a decently powered integrated... now

A shoebox sized streamer head unit

A shoebox sized NAS / Switch (tweaked for hi-end aspirants)

A shoebox sized DAC, upgradeable via 'drop-in' FPGA chip.

A shoebox powersupply versatile enough to power all three!

+1 for

Shoebox streamer head unit

Shoebox NAS / switch

Suggestions Box for Naim R & D

Dear Naim,

Don't make your interconnects so bloody long.

Single stacks of Fraim are the wave of the future.

Dear naim,

please allow the unitiserve to use a harddisk-attached-to-its-USB-port as a Music Store!

what happened to your plans for music servers with storage on a large SSD (rather than HDD)?

please allow selection of radio presets from the front buttons of e.g. the unitilite

please refresh the preamp range! E.g., they need lower input sensitivities.

please never refresh the NDS - no improvements needed!

Cheers,

Stefan

The Muso is excellent, but too big for my kitchen. A two-thirds size one at £500 would be great.

Chris, that seems a dumb question. We all know that the Aro is already 'Super'.

Amen brother!

Add an analogue to digital converter to the DAC-V1

Posted on: 10 October 2015 by Dingding

space optimisation , it would be the biggest upgrade to most systems.

Consolidate the range offered. There are too many different products, especially on the streaming side, that many dealers can't keep a full range in stock. Then concentrate on producing a top end DAC.

Some form of mains conditioner/rectifier/whatever supply designed such that we can all have a good mains feed to drive our black boxes.

How about some right angled Super Lumina speaker plugs, so that those of us with proper Naim speakers can use the cables?

It's on its way apparently. Let's hope so - I'd love one. A mini Muso, or Musette.

A full sized, CD player like box with a slot for a SSD drive in place of the CD drawer or slot.

Like any CD player, the SSD player would have analogue and digital outputs. It would be equipped with open-source software which is controllable via open source tablet apps. The software would support parsing the SSD data and building a local database according to user-definable tags. Setup and replay would be wirelessly controllable and no UPnP server, switches or ethernet wires into the living or listening room would be needed. No data transfer would take place at replay time. One would be able to add new files to the removable SSD drive via rsync. If available on the SSD drive and upon demand, the tablet app would display the cover-art and the booklet of the currently playing album or of an album of choice without attempting at establishing an internet connection.

NaimUnitiSource - just like a NaimUniti but take out the amplifier.

quote:
As well as being able to play UPnP streams at up to 24bit/192kHz resolution via a wired or wireless connection, NaimUnitiSource incorporates a CD player, a 70W per channel amplifier, six digital inputs, built in Spotify Connect, Bluetooth (aptX) connectivity, a DAB+/DAB/FM and internet radio tuner as well as a USB interface that enables playback from an iPod or high-resolution digital audio from a USB memory stick. Just add speakers, and your existing integrated or pre/power amplifier.

Shoe box FM/internet tuner.

Produce a Sky+ type box for Sky, Freesat and Freeview with good quality (hifi quality, Naim quality ) signal paths with improved power supplies  and connections.

This will require some cooperation with other companies.

A Stageline sized Ethernet+Wifi to SPDIF end point unit for nDAC, DAC-V1 and other 3rd party DACs to turn them into basic streamers.

Remember Squeezebox? This would be a software based musical server, doing all the audio conversion job, and digital audio to a striped-down-to-basics digital-only SPDIF cabled or wireless interface.

I could buy one from Moon Audio, but I prefer to have a Naim badge on it...

Bye.

Preamps with fewer source inputs. With many sources consolidated through a DAC or streamer I think the cost of 6 inputs with seperate Record selections is starting the becoming redundant. 3 user labelable inputs is probably enough.

And balance can relegated to the remote. Since it is rarely adjusted once set for the room, seems a waste to have a whole knob for this.

Feeling_zen - I agree. I've always thought the NAC202 looks so much more aesthetically pleasing than the preamps further up the range. Less (externally) is more.

Agree that consolidation would be good.  Stop the XS range and bridge the gap between the the Uniti and Classic range with products like this as well a new DAC ( I see that Naim, not Focal, have announced that they will be at CES 2016, yep imgination is in over drive)
