How many times have you come back to Naim?

Posted by: spacey on 11 October 2015

For me its the third time, been swapping about between ATC, Meridian, Rega, Bryston and Naim for some time now (nearly 20 years!!!). I must admit I'm very please with the way Naim have developed mainly with the pre/power/streaming combos; its the concept I was looking for 6-7 years.

How about you guys?

Once but the first visit was only for a month before I decided the Nait 5 wasn't a keeper.

Stayed with it for 10 years now.  We auditioned a load of stuff and weren't inclined towards Salisbury at least in part influenced by a lot of the anti-Naim rhetoric elsewhere.

Then we had a demo and that rather changed things.  Doubt I'll ever change now. Why would I?

I started with Naim in 2010 with a Nait 5i amp to replace a Rotel RA1062. With the sources i still had (Rotel CD, Sony Tuner, Clearaudio TT) and the Linn Ninka speakers still wasn't sure if the Nait 5i was a keeper. In the spring of 2011 i had a short love affair with Cyrus amps and cd player but after a month or so went back to the Nait 5i. It was much more musical and less bright/artificial. I sold the 5i for a Nait XS with FC2x, still have the Nait XS.

I also had a love/hate relation with the Stageline N and Flatcap 2x for about 2 years. I owned 4 of them. Finally after buying a lp12 with adikt the SL was a keeper. Wasn't happy with the FC2x for the Nait XS, but now it's only there to power the SL.

Travelled the world of equipment and reached the end with Naim

Come back?  I've never left!  First started using Naim equipment around 1996 if memory serves me right.

Had some item of Naim since my first purchase in about 1979, c.36 years ago.

Naim since 1983, never left.

About the same time and nor me. I have to say I am struggling to understand the point of this thread.

Well some forums are sometimes frequented by folks who are rather vociferous in having once been Naim users.  Sought of intriguing to see who has tried an alternative.

My last pice is my HDX which  struggling as a source compared to my TT. Looks like it has just failed, so perhaps time to move to something else.

Started in about 1979 with a huge silver Hitachi monster of an amp.

100w per channel of giant silver delight, with a machined aluminium volume knob the size of an apple.

Proper hi-fi.

Then it broke.

Defected to something much more modest, self effacing and less Hifi called an A60 from A&R Cambridge. Remember them? A wonderful, musical thing.

Tried a Naim 42/110, which was supposed to be good but was a lot of money for 30 Watts/channel.

Being young and wise, I went for an Audio Vois instead, which was obviously better.

Well, until it broke, that is. Which wasn't long. Oops.

So sold that and bought something called a Naim 32/Snaps/250. That seemed to be really rather good.

The 32 became a 32.5 and the snaps a new type of supply called a Hicap. That was good too!

That all stayed until funds were needed for a family, then the whole lot had to go....

... To be replaced by a Technics all-in-one, including the linear tracking turntable.

That would be the bottom of the cycle.

Listened to Arcam, Cyrus, MF and others but returned to Naim with a 32.5/140.

I've heard a number of other makes, including a very gold Jadis valve amp, which sounded lovely when it worked, but Naim suits these cloth ears.

best regards, FT

Does having bought two lengths of NAC A5 and a trip round the factory* back in the mid 80's count in the longevity stakes?

*not to mention hearing JV give a lecture at the College just down the road

+1 (or was it 1982?  Can't be bothered to go and dig out the receipts to check)

I have had various non-Naim amps/CD player etc in my study system (Yamaha, Arcam etc) but all those thingies now replaced by 552 etc.

I have been with Naim since 1994 and have never been tempted to leave.  It ticks all the boxes as far as I am concerned.  I currently have 6 of them....

I have had Naim in my system for the past 21 years. And currently enjoying my new, two box system more than ever .

I think it was 1983 for me as well - but it could have been late 1982. Never left - and still have my first Naim purchase too

Again, I never left and have been listening to Naim gear since the eighties.

Naim is my second serious set. I started with Revox, and even if I would consider changing, I wouldn't be able to afford it....

Posted on: 11 October 2015 by nigelb

Started with an Amstrad tuner and really crappy music centre speakers. Added wharfale linton and then celestion ditton speakers. Amstrad blew up (I think) then got a NAD 3020 amp then an Arcam A60 amp and a rega planar2 TT - lovely, probably my first proper hifi. Toyed with TDL 3 speakers.

Then started building my first Naim system and ended that with probably one of a very few (if not the only) tiny active Naim systems comprising of cd3, nac92, 2 X nap90, ixo crossover, flatcap and a pair of Intro speakers. These model numbers maybe incorrect. Did anyone else out there arrive at this? Oh also used this with a Linn LP12 for several years.

Sold the lot to fund a misadventure into Home Theatre. When the family refused to be subjected to blockbuster movies complete with massive projector screen and 5.1 surround sound balsting out explosions in every corner of the room I sold the lot (still not sure what their problem was).

Anyway, I grew up a bit and went back to Naim hifi which I love and listen to without any advice from the family! Have ended up with NDS/282/SupercapDR/NAP250DR. I say 'ENDED up with' - who am I kidding?

So the short answer to the question is once!

Indeed. I kept my Rega Planar 3 / A60 / Harbeth HL Monitor Mk III system from 1978 to 1998. Then I bought a Nait 3. Sticked to Naim ever since.

I sometimes like to play the devil's advocate and question certain aspects of Naim products.

Think of it as constructive criticism from a card carrying member who's payed his dues.

That being said - while they're not perfect I doubt I could ever get rid of my XS 2 unless it's for another Naim.

Never come back because......   i have never part with naim

Got into Naim in 2005 with the purchase of my CDX2, after my wonderful Arcam Alpha 5 plus CD player finally died a death. Always had at least some Naim in my system ever since, and now it's mostly Naim.
