Unitiserve tagging for dummies...

Posted by: PBenny1066 on 11 October 2015

Hello folks,

this is my first attempt to edit tag data, and after 4 hours or so gaffing around haven't got much to show for my efforts, so please be gentle…..

I have a Unitiserve 2TB, and have some high res music in the Downloads folder.  I just want to clean up some of the very basic meta data which is in some cases either not present or not correct. I am not seeking to add extensive meta data, just want to get the basics right.  So a few questions…..

1) Is it possible to edit the basic data such as "genre", "artist" directly using the n-Serve app on Mac OSX ? In the app if I right click an album, it shows an option to edit metadata but it is greyed out, not accessible.

2) Assuming 1) is not possible, I have been trying to use XLD to edit flask files stored on my Mac. So the next question is about XLD which I am struggling with.  If I open an album in XLD, I can find no way of adding the basic data such as genre and artist to all tracks in the album simultaneously. It seems that I have to add this data track by track, so surely I am  doing something wrong ?

Any ideas ?

3) If I should ever feel the need to add more sophisticated data to high res FLAC files, can XLD do this and if so how ?

Thanks,

Paul

Hi Paul

It isn't possible to amend metadata on downloads via n-Serve, only on your CD rips.

So you have to do this via PC or MAC.

I don't have any experience with XLD, but I would assume you would do the same as I do with DB Poweramp to adjust more than one at a time: select all tracks that you wish to change, click Change, adjust what you want to change, click OK and it should have changed all those selected?

Maybe someone who knows about XLD can chime in on these 2 points.

Good luck!

When you download albums, it's a good idea to edit the metadata while they are still on your computer. Get them just as you want them, them copy them to the serv download folder.

Paul, XLD is fine for ripping cd's, but it's the wrong tool for editing tags with OS X.

Use Metadatics.  You can find it online to download.

I would suggest copying the files from the uServe to your Mac, deleting them from Downloads, editing them on your Mac, and then moving them to Downloads.  Otherwise, if you merely edit what's already in the Downloads directory, you will need to wait for the uServe to pick up the changes.  Then from now on, as HH says, check the tags and do any editing BEFORE you move the files over to the uServe.

This is all you need to do . . . and you'll be fine!

Thanks Bart and others, now the proud owner of metadatics and all my tags are in order.

i find this forum indispensable in navigating the digital minefield !

One last question - when using the downloads folder on the U.S., am I correct in thinking that there are only a few possibilities for adding tags ? I.e. Only support for basic tagging.

Cheers,

paul

Now you're asking a more complicated question - you need a list of those tags that the UnitiServe supports when serving files from the Downloads folder.  There should be a list somewhere, but I'm not sure where.  I just use the basic tags (album name, artist, track name, track number, etc.) and have never felt I was missing out.
