Naim App changes tune order or worse!

Posted by: Steve GTX on 14 October 2015

I've converted all my CD's to FLAC, using DB Power Amp and store them on a QNAP NAS Drive.

I use the Naim App with my N272, but some the tunes appear in a different order and sometimes, if I select an album from the list a completely different one loads up - it's just happened - selected Queens Greatist Hits and got the Pretenders and. Bob Marley's Legend is in the completely wrong order.

Does not happen with the Sonos App using the same NAS

Any ideas?

Have you tried resetting the app and clearing its cache etc?

Yep!

I'm no QNAP expert, but whatever I suspect its something to do with the UPnP media server, its not in the app as thats just a dumb display & only shows what its being fed by the UPnP.

And what is it ??  Twonky, Asset ..........    & if its Twonky,  I haven't got a clue

Re-indexing the NAS is what I would go for first ...........

Posted on: 14 October 2015 by Bart

It's surely the server and/or tagging of the files.

Posted on: 14 October 2015 by cdboy

Have you tried putting Asset on the QNAP ?

Then you can search in Advanced Settings, Folders and FileNames and it will appear exactly as you have filed them.

Thanks for the feedback.

I've tried re-index but I'm sure that it's the software that's the issue here, as I say..it works with the Sonos gear.

The UPnP (what ever that is!) is Twonky and several people have recommended Asset. I've downloaded it to the desktop of my PC bun't can see any instructions as to how to get it on the NAS drive............. Should add here that I'm a but of a technophobe!

Anyone got step by step instructions?

Steve - I too use a QNAP NAS for streaming. I loaded Minim but you do it (or at least I did it) not via the PC directly but through the QNAP web-interface.

Connect to your QNAP via Chrome on the PC using its IP address in the url box at the top (192.x.x. etc) and then go to "Applications" if I remember correctly. You should be able to load it that way.

Exactly, when the Naim app is displaying the track order its acting like a sort of web browser and can only display what the UPnP media server sends it. If the order is wrong, almost certainly the media server is sending it wrong.. And the poor Naim app can only do what its told.

There is a metadata type/value pair that describes track order.. And rippers like dBPoweramp will set this. If this value is missing because it wasn't inserted at rip time, or edited in manually afterwards, then the media server might not be able to order the tracks correctly, and fallback to alphabetical order or similar.

SteveGTX, I would check the Asset web site, if it can be loaded on your NAS the instructions will be there and no doubt user experiences discussed on their forum.

I've got Asset on my QNAP NAS, and I'm not as technically minded as I once was (old age = less patience!). But there's full instructions on the Asset website as to how to install it.

If memory serves, you use the app browser on the NAS's interface (ie, through the browser on your computer) to install Asset, and do all the configuring that way?

This seems similar to other threads such as missing or incorrect album art where it's always the server that gets the blame. I don't understand though why Sonos still manages to display everything correctly whereas the "poor Naim app" doesn't.

Surely if one app can manage it, then the Naim should be able to? I have an fairly old Netgear which I think runs Twonky from memory and I can't put anything else on it due to it's age. I really don't see why I should have to replace a perfectly good NAS just because the Naim app doesn't like what it sends.

Ok test... Get Sonos to connect to the UPnP media server, (remember Sonos can connect to these media servers like Asset etc). If the order in the Sonos app is correct and not in the Naim app off the same server then you can possibly blame the Naim app, but I suspect this has absolutely zilch to do with Naim....... I always find comparing like with like off the same media server, not surprisingly, Sonos, Naim, plus any other control point, display the same....

In my limited experience, the idea that a streamer can only see what a server sends it is not 100% correct. For me, the Naim app consistently shows the contents of the 'last played' folder inaccurately. I can't blame the much-maligned Twonky for this, as my server is a Naim Unitiserve, and the N-Serve app always shows the info correctly, even though the Naim app doesn't.

Chris, what I said is the app can only see what the server sends,  not the streamer.

What the server sends is the issue, it does not contain the right info to enable the app & the streamer to function correctly & I strongly suspect its a tag issue.

If Steve GTX (the OP) has not done a re-index,  that does need to be done first as some UPnP servers don't do this as music gets loaded.  Then the tag editing needs to be looked at.

However it does seem as tho' Steve GTX does not have the expertise for this & needs help,  whilst collectively we might be able to help over the forum, I suspect a one-one hands on expert will do this better & quicker than a bunch of us forum'ites.

This will be down to how the tracks are tagged. Of greater urgency is getting a robust server up and running such as Asset or Minimserver. It's an easy process. QNAP make it straightforward.  Then you'll see how your files are tagged.

If you are using Twonky, for tracks alrady ripped you will need to add track number prefix to each file name manually (dBpoweramp can do this automatically for you when you rip the files), then re-scan, and the tracks will appear in the correct order.

There are versions of Asset meant to run on a PC, and versions meant to run on various nas boxes.  You need to find the version for your particular nas, if it exists.  The Asset website will provide detailed instructions.  You will likely download the installer (for the proper version for your nas) onto your pc, copy it over to your nas, and then run the installer using your nas box's install utility.  The only role your PC will play is to download it from the web so that you can copy it over to the nas.

Hi Guys, sorry fro the very late reply but I got sent away on business.

Here's an update. I really struggled to download ASSET and it turned out to be a bug in Internet Explorer (good old Microsoft!) but with Chrome I got it downloaded.

Like magic the music is displayed correctly and I've also been able to correct some odd tagging issues - I've really got to take more care when ripping, to ensure that the tags are OK.

I also got rid of twonky.

I want to thank everyone who responded.

Good result. Glad it shook out OK in the end.

Sorry but you are 100% wrong here.  The "last played" folder on the Naim App is created by the UPnP server on the UnitiServe - witness the face that other UPnP servers don't display this folder!

Eloise, I'm not sure I understand what you mean here! I'm easily confused, though. All I know is that the two apps show different results in the same folder.

But NServe and the Naim app are fed differently. The Naim app can only show what it is sent.. But if the UPnP media server provides a value that is different from the NServe app, then surely that is an issue for the respective server apps, not the Naim App client.

In using MinimServer, I see no setting or value for anything recently played on my Naim app, because MinimServer doesn't offer this info (yet)
