Adding glass and ball bearings to Isoblue - how?

Posted by: Tarquin Maynard - Portly on 16 October 2015

Hola muchachos

For some odd reason I came across a thread about Isoblue and mention was made of adding glass and ball bearings to improve the sound.

Can somebody who has done this show exactly what they did? And describe the sonic results?

It was aluminium plate, but perfectly flat - much more perfectly flat than even glass. It's used in the factory for ensuring feet are levelled during production and also was used as interface plates in SL2s where perfect flatness was absolutely essential for the gap to work like a seal.

We're listening louder because it's cleaner sounding and we're enjoying it more.

Great news, Christopher_M.  It is often the effects of vibration, becoming excessive and or non-linear, that limits the loudness of music playback.  This often occurs well below the levels for amplifier clipping or misbehavior (at least in a Naim amp).  You have obviously addressed this issue properly, by your description.  The improvement in sound can be profound, and not an intuitive result for most observers.

Enjoy,

I used the fraim glass/balls/cups on a quadraspire wallshelf in similar fashion to good effect too, for a CD555.

I've built a number of hifi cabinets to house my naim gear and included glass in a variety of ways . It certainly improves the high frequencies of Naim gear.

Is the difference subtle or appreciable? Did you do an AB test?

It sharpens the treble noticeably.

i suspect that using glass shelves with other makes could make the sound become shrill but not with naim
