Superuniti or Supernait2??...Again.

I've been reading some threads on this but would like some additional thoughts. I will eventually have to decide between a SU and SN2. I am currently auditioning a SU, and from memory of owning a SN2, the SU sounds warmer and creamier with better flow but the SN2 punchier, more prominent midrange and more power but more glare...
Using SN2 bare, which would you recommend?

I was in a similar situation about two years ago. I had demoed the SU (which I found very good but not as good as the SN2) and I was planning to sell my 20 years old CD player. But I was not convinced ethernet streaming was the way to go and the SU mostly makes sense as a one-box streaming solution. In the end I bought a SN2 and a second hand Naim DAC. My main rationale for choosing the SN2 over the SU was to achieve a very clean separation between amplification concerns and digital-to-analog conversion concerns. I have not regretted this choice and I am very happy with my current system. I think you would do nothing wrong with a SN2: it gives you most flexibility. Should you later want to move to internet streaming or to USB streaming, the SN2 could stay. And should you later decide to sell it, for whatever reason, you would likely be able to do so at a very good price. Best, nbpf
I agree with nbpf. The SN2 offers better sound and greater flexibility.
Hah! Salty stuff ![]()
FWIW, I used to own SN2, but because of cost restrictions and overpowering bass (in my small 16 sq m room) I let it go. To be honest, I don't necessarily miss it, and I like the warmer presentation of the first SN better - and, if I remember right, I think that's why I liked the SU more as well on that short audition. The Nap200 (non-dr I think) also has a warmer feel to it, and I prefer it's presentation to the SN2, which can sometimes sound just a wee bit clinical - not harsh or forward, just a bit... distant. So if you like that kind of thing, go for SN2. But if it's warmth you require, I think N-172 + Nap200 might really be worth auditioning, should that combo fir your budget. For me, the flow of the music is much more important then ultimate detail and instrument separation.
Was the SN2 you auditioned fully burnt in? Sounds like a fresh sample of SN2. In 2013 I bought SN2 new to replace my SN1 and my first impressions were exactly like that. It is more detailed and quicker than SN1 and that might give you an illusion of clinical. In reality SN1 is just way slower and muddier sounding. SN1 has really nothing against SN2, it's so clearly in a different league than its predecessor. Now after two years, clinical is the last word I'd use to describe SN2 sound.
