Heads up "Detectorists" fans

Posted by: Kevin-W on 17 October 2015

Just been going through my emails and there was one from the BBC Press office.

Series 2 of "Detectorists" starts on BBC4 on 29th October. It's again set in Essex, and is written and directed by Mr Crook. He stars, along with Toby Jones, Rachael Stirling, etc. No changes to the formula (that's a relief) although Lance's flaky New Age ex-wife Maggie and her sponging Pizza Hut employee boyfriend have gone.

Good news, however, is that all the Danebury Metal Detecting Club regulars will be back, Diana Rigg (appropriately enough playing Becky's mum) will be guesting in two episodes and "Simon and Garfunkel" will be making a return!

There's also an hour-long Xmas special on Boxing Day.

Let joy be unconfined!

Thanks Kevin - joy indeed! Just finished watching the first series for the second time - brilliant

Oh goody! A brilliant, really funny series. Thanks for the heads-up Kevin.

Some top notch programmes starting over the next few week. Modern Family series 7 starts next week and Trollied series 5 (still set in Warrington) early November.

I’ve been looking forward to Detectorists series 2, but not convinced it will reach the heights of series 1, I don’t think the format lends itself to ongoing multiple series.

I simply don't get that series. I can't even watch it. The laugh track just grates. The show has that constant and annoying 3/4 "straight-line, funny-line, laugh-track, repeat" tempo that I just can't stand. It reminds me of The Nanny.

Series 1 has been available on iPlayer recently, and we finally got to finish off the series (in fact watched it all).  It's just fantastic, and I'm really looking forward to the new series.

There may be one or two more days to catch the early Series 1 episodes - be quick!

The joy of the distressingly sad. But familiar:

See University Challenge last night?

Yeah.

Anything?

No.

You?

Nah.

Nearly got Benjamin Britten.

You can't nearly get an answer right.

I had it in my head.

Didn't say anything?

Chickened out.

Were you on your own?

Yeah.

But you were still too scared to say it out loud?

Yeah.

Doesn't count.

I know.

Should have gone for it.

I know.

TV Nostagia Conventions. Not what they used to be.

I'm also a convert, catching the recent repeats. Wonderful series with a huge grin factor. Many parallels with hifi hobbyists and who amongst us do not recognise some of the quirks and foibles.

My name is Ron and I am a detectorist. There I've said it.

There is as much tweaking and "upgradeitis" in metal detecting as in hi-fi! Fortunately the main hardware does not go much above about £3k - until the next big thing makes an appearance every three or four years.

Oh, and all those characters depicted in the series exist in every MD club

Could I interest you in some can ring pulls?

We are enjoying catching up on this series too.

Have you got an 87 Vimto?

I first got a C-Scope TR200 when I was a kid. I've always been a detectorsist. Never seen this series though.

That was fab. Not only a fantastic collection of likeable losers, misfits and eccentrics (plus one old bag of a mother in law and a very sensible girlfriend), but a beautifully observed study of male friendship that never resorted to cliche.

Great scenery too, lovingly filmed. And, most importantly, funny. Looking forward to next week.

Last Friday's Detectorists was excellent I thought.

Overall, this series has taken me a little longer to warm to than the first one did, but the lemonade scene in episode 5 was worth the entrance money on its own...

I liked "Why the silent treatment?"

So the series has, regrettably, ended. A deceptively simple little comedy, but with great acting, superb characters and a brilliant, subtle script. Well done the Beeb! More please...

Nice. Not quite as good as S1 though. These things rarely are. There is a Christmas special still to come

How many of us were willing Lance to go back and sweep with his detector at the end though. And how many of us were expecting him to pull up a Ring Pull. Tizer. 1975?    But really wanting him to find the gold..?

Dunno James, I thought it was at least as good. It'll be nice to get both series on DVD and watch them again.

Posted on: 05 December 2015 by BigH47

Thoroughly enjoyed them we did. I think the absolute simplicity and slow presentation really works so well.

I never did get a detector always wanted one but was too much of an "off the wall purchase ".

A friend is a detectorist and has a small collection of coins from Roman onwards, some buttons and bits of aluminum probably WW2 plane bits.

I don't think it was ever going to be as good as series 1, J, simply because that first series was such an out-of-the-blue surprise.

That said, I really enjoyed it and it was good to see some of the minor characters (Hugh, the two lesbians, Terry's splendidly ditzy wife Sheila) getting more of a look in.

Posted on: 05 December 2015 by JamieWednesday

Yes, some pathos evident from Sheila at the end there...Subplot for S3 perhaps?

"I feel like I've been groomed"

Lovely end to the second series. It felt somehow, and unnecessarily - busier - than the first. Andy and Lance's relationship somehow would not have been what it was without Andy knowing Lance had a child, but who really cares? The characterisation, dialogue and acting were all first class. And with some genuinely moving AND laugh-out-loud moments. What other recent comedy series has achieved that?

Terrific.

Just caught the last episode. At times it was like listening to a visual version of a Richard Thompson album pastoral, quintisencial English, funny, moving, sad, clever fantastic TV.
