If you care about the future direction of the BBC, including of course FM radio, please take the opportunity to complete the questionnaire which may be found at:
Thank you.
I have a feeling this is what economists term the free rider problem.

Dear Derek,
Do you believe the BBC as currently run and financed is sustainable in the long run?
If yes, then I would disagree, but if no, then what would be your useful contribution to changing the situation be?
ATB from George
From the perspective of an American who has worked in public broadcasting, and grew up on BBC syndicated TV programs by way of PBS / NET / re-broadcast, it's quite simple - if you split the television and radio production into two entities, both will suffer.
Simply ignore the Murdochian shills who are screaming for its dismantlement; they will have no broadcast service to announce their miserable passing when the time comes, otherwise....
One of the big issues around the BBC switching to, say, subscription based funding is that it would wipe out one of the key elements of its mission (statement) - that of universality.
In an extreme comparison it would be akin to abolishing comprehensive education, and saying from now its all private, OR.... comprehensive remains an option but only with compulsory advert breaks in class every 10 minutes, where sponsors can sell sh*t to kids (McDonalds, Coke, GTA etc).

At last, we're getting to the truth. For all the pontificating on this board about the affordability of the BBC and the licence fee sustainability it's really not about that. It's a purely political decision to run down the BBC. First the lack of indexing in the licence fee for political means. Next the funding of the BBC World Service is passed form the government onto the BBC and finally, inexcusably, the cost of social care is passed on to the BBC (free licences for over 75's).
Let's not forget that the government (and I include the last lot under Blair) have friends in Sky places.

I would agree with that Redmires, 100%.
You only need to look at the political flak they copped over the Clarkson affair. A classic case of b*ggered if you do, b*ggered if you don't.....
