Nac 82 service and pots 8 upgrade

Posted by: Sounsfaber on 20 October 2015

Dear Abby, just wondering if it's worth going from pots 6 to pots 8. Is it just that pots 8 will be newer so has had less wear which gives it a sonic benefit? Or is it just a better design full stop.

I will get the service any how, just thinking maybe I can ask him to clean the pots6 up and save on the 8 upgrade.

End goal will be the 52 as I have a SC, but for now I'm just going to have to do with the 82. Also I do not think it will be hard to get my money back on the upgrade on the secondhand market, that's not so much of a issues for me though as I'm a for the moment type of person, its my wife that has the issues.....,,

cheers

Yes, Pots 8 is worthwhile (newer pots, better layout, less susceptible to microphonic effects) but you will need to make a choice, balancing the cost to go to POTS8 against the cost to upgrade to a later or updated NAC52.  Perhaps a NAC52 is the next step to take...?

FWIW and FME I would say that, based on the incredible value that the 52 now represents, it does not make sense to sink additional funds in to the 82.  It's unlikely you will get all of it back on resale and the same money could go towards the same service and POTS8 upgrade on a 52.

To my ears the jump from 82 to 52 is very significant and worth making at the earliest opportunity.  Only caveat, of course, is that your source is up to the job

Naim Service dept can tell you this.

From memory though, Naim charged circa £350 for the POTS8 board in my 52 when it was serviced a couple of years ago.

Best regards, FT

Thank you for the replys, I think the 82 service and pot8 up grade will come in around $1100 nz. That would mean the 82 will owe me $2800, I saw a 2000 pots 8 serviced by naim nac52 on flea bay a while back,  I think it went for £2250 = $5000 +/- .That would end up landed here for around $6000 inc taxes and PayPal  exchange rate mark up. The 52 would be worth every penny and some. Think I'll have to go back to my beloved and ask her (again) if I can sell my car for boxes.
Yes Ricard Nac 52 is the next step, but I'm afraid it looks like I'm going to do it the hard way.
What does give me some joy is the fact the pots 8 is a real upgrade and after Mr Murphy has finished with it, I'll have a pretty nice preamp.  Considering It has been serviced in 20 years!
Thanks and regards

I'd feel better about you seeking the services of Mr Murphy than risking a s/h purchase from overseas anyway.  He will make sure your NAC82 is singing as well as it should.  And then maybe ask him to keep a weather eye out on a NAC52 for the future...

Yes he has made amost all of my olives sing like angles. I can remember when I was 19 (now I'm 43) I  purchased a nait 3 and Mr Murphy was the naim man. I would guess you wouldn't find anybody more qualified to service olive gear.
Dam we are SO lucky in NZ!
