Downsampling DSD 128 (or higher) to DSD64

Hi Mates,

Does anybody know any tool (software) that downsamples DSD 128 files to

DSD 64 without any loss of sound quality ?

Thx in advance.

I know this isn't helpful, but surely by definition it can't be done without loss of sound quality - otherwise what would be the point of 128?

Hi PZ,

JRiver can do a conversion on that basis, creating a '64' version of the file which some of the Naim (SHARC equipped) streamers ought to be able to process.  I stress this is a conversion, not a transcoding on the fly - I'm not sure whether the latter is possible.  Conversion is under the Library Tools right mouse options.  I'd imagine quality isn't greatly affected but, as Goon says, cannot theoretically be the same....

Hi,

Try the TASCAM HiRes Editor - http://tascam.com/product/hi-res_editor/

Thanks,

Simon.

Transcoding 128 to 64DSD will affect quality and introduce artefacts. Converting DSD, especially downs sampling to me feels fraught with issues, given the processing and noise shaping in a DSD stream as opposed the case of linear PCM. I would have thought this process be quite resource intensive. I very much doubt the processing power of the Naim devices would be suitable without notable loss of quality.

Fair point Simon, and I really couldn't talk to the limitations of and technical goings on within the conversion process, or whether the end product would play on the (latest firmware) Naim streamers -  because I don't have one to test that.....  :-(

However I can report that a converted/down-sampled file plays fine within JRiver, no artefacts or oddities, and no glaringly obvious loss of quality.  A bit quieter than the original though.
