What's wrong with my system

Posted by: SongStream on 22 October 2015

No, not a question, but summary.  The current set up I am running  is a DAC-V1, which is the wrong DAC, into an SN2, which is also wrong as there are two pre-amps in the signal path, into ProAc D18s.  I am using a windows PC as the digital streamer, which is the wrong thing to do.

I have the wrong speaker plugs jammed into the back of the SN2 in the form of BFA banana plugs.  These are in turn attached to the wrong cable, QED Kudos bi-wire, and bi-wired to the Proacs, which is all completely wrong.. and they're the wrong length, just 2m each.  I am using the wrong van den hul RCA interconnects rather than DIN.   I am also using the wrong mains leads, and with the wrong fuses.  I have an audiophile mains filter which the TV, PC, and bluray player are plugged into, with the DAC-V1 and SN2 in a meticulously polished MK Duraplug, which is clearly the wrong way around.

The ProAcs are in the wrong position, merely 38cm from the rear wall, though actually over 50cm from each side wall....tick, got something right.   I have the wrong kind of AV enclosure with all the electronics on, positioned in the wrong place between the speakers, though with plenty of air between them and it, and wrongly have a TV standing on top of it.

Despite all of this, I can still just hear whether the album playing is by Tori Amos or Metallica for example.  So it's still pretty good.

I think the problem might be the low-quality air between your speakers and AV/Tyrannosaur enclosure.

Also, take a close look at the fuses in your 'mains lead'. Neither of these two things carries a brand name.

Then report back.

SS, it's all good - Just think of how much room for improvement there is!

However, I'm a bit concerned that you say you have the "wrong fuses".  Please ensure that you have the right fuses as this is a safety issue.

Richard's quite correct, as always. But I still think you need to look at getting some more branded air between the speakers and the enclosures.

Lol, wierd thing is, despite all the things I know are 'wrong', it sounds so good I dare not touch anything now.

Seriously, the fuses came with mains leads, but some time ago I checked them and concluded they were the correct spec, but that was a while ago now, and out of paranoia I'm thinking I'll swap them with those from the Naim leads.  Better to be safe.  Will have to give them a good polish first though.

When in doubt buy something that is stupidly expensive, always works, even when it actually sounds worse

So to sum up, you are DIW (doing it wrong).
