Seeking work around for connecting muso and naim app

Posted by: Daan on 23 October 2015

hi all,

Just wondering if anyone here has a solution for the following problem I encountered when trying to set up a Mu-so at the office. After connecting the Mu-so to the employee wifi network using key sharing, the Mu-so light turned white and iRadio worked if operated by the dial on top of the Mu-so. So far so good. Yet, the Naim app could not find the Mu-so. After spending an hour or so trying to fix it by manually adding a "room", using the ip address to be used for set-up using a pc and fruitlessly trying other potential work arounds, I called our firm's tech support. Turned out that for security reasons the office wifi network does not allow devices using the network to find each other and connect. Is there anyway I can connect the Naim app to the Mu-so by other means than using the same network?

If not, I would think Naim should consider to develop one, as there are presumably many more companies with similar security induced limitations in the wifi network and as a consequence Naim may now be missing out on what might be an interesting part of the market: people who like me like to listen to music at work.

thoughts anyone?

best, Daan

Through the Naim app you can manually add a product using it's IP address. This works best if the device you want to connect to has a fixed IP address.

You will need to find your mu-so IP address, I find 'advanced ip scanner' on windows of 'fing' on OSX/IOS/Android are the best options for this.

For fixing an IP address you can type the current IP address into your web browser and fix the address outside of the DHCP range.

If this all seems too hard, your firm's tech support should be able to do this for you.

If they've setup their network that way, the only workaround I can think of would be to buy a wireless router (with multiple LAN ports) and plug it into the Ethernet jack you have at your desk. Set it up to just create a wireless network but not do DHCP or NAT. Plug your office computer and mu-so into your own wireless router. Then have your phone join your own wireless network. Depending on their policies and how they lock down their Ethernet network, this may result in it not working, or in you getting fired. Have fun!

Before the days of universal wifi, Apple used to promote the Airport Express as a way to create your own secure wireless access point on a public network, such as a hotel room with a ethernet socket. You would be doing much the same thing at work, I guess, as long as their network security allows it. So maybe worth a try.

First of all, thank you for all your suggestions. Building a small wifi network of my own will not be an option for several reasons, including my possibly getting fired. Using Airplay crossed my mind too, but when setting up the mu-so as an airplay speaker, an "unknown error" kept occurring. And if it would work, I am not certain it would work as a connection between the naim app and the ipad/iphone. I suspect it would just result in streaming music from the ipod or the TIDAl app on the ipod to the muso rather than using the integrated Tidal function in the Mu-so.

I will try the suggestion with a fixed ip address, perhaps that is an alternative that is not blocked by the network settings. If everything fails, I may need to set up the muso at home, programming iradio presets etc, and keep TIDAL streaming through the TIDAl app and then with BT or USB interlink to the Mu-so. Having said that, I would welcome a Naim app udate allowing an alternative to sharing the same wifi network which will establish the connection between Mu-somand app.

cheers, Daan
