Gigabit switch - sometimes search throws up too many posts
Posted by: Sloop John B on 28 October 2015
I have just upgraded to 240Mbps internet.
My 8 port switch (connected to the UPC router/modem) is a 10/100 and so I'm not seeing these speeds on the PCs connected to the switch.
I'd appreciate a recommendation for a replacement switch that will allow my PCs to use my full internet speeds.
I do have a superuniti attached to the switch directly so a switch that doesn't muck up the audio is obviously also a consideration.
Thanks in advance.
At work we deploy Netgear or TP-Link for basic needs, Cisco or HP for more advanced needs. I'd say the Netgear GS-308-100UKS around £20 on Amazon would do fine, we've a few out there no issues so far. I prefer it to the GS608 due to the metal body.

If you need 240MB/s to your PC connect it directly to the router/modem.
Is the PC network card capable of 240MB/s?
Hi any consumer gigabit ethernet switch will be fine. But remember internet access speed does usually relate to a LAN port speed, but a gigabit switch should give you plenty of headroom for devices that can support it.

The Netgear GS1xx series are fine. So a GS108 would do the job for you. Also about £20.

Actually a point here might be that Naim devices don't support 1Gbps Ethernet, so arguably a 10/100 Mbps switch is fine......
Cisco SG100D 8 Port works great for me. Metal shell, Unmanaged and about 40GBP on Amazon.

What about the PC's SJB mentions, pretty sure they will be Gb
Indeed most PCs support 1000Base-T these days, but Naim mostly supports 100 and 10 Base-T. A gigabit switch will negotiate its link speed with the connected device.

There are lots of advantages to gigabit, the fact naim does not support it does not remove those benefits.
For instance copying new music to your NAS will be greatly improved which indirectly improves your naim experience.
As you have such a good broadband speed you should take this opportunity to improve the entire network, for instance AC wireless access point (Assuming of course you have a modern laptop/tablet)
Thanks

I use since time this: Linksys AC1200 MAX
If you need more details just post.

hi SJB I found the Netgear GS605 to be audibly better than the GS308. For me using the GS308 introduced a distinct edge whereas the GS605 was softer/more natural.
Most switches have an internal SMPS to produce their working voltages which seems to propagate its personality onto the Ethernet. Multiple ferrites on the SMPS mains and especially DC cable also helps, or a better linear supply. Keep the switch a good distance (> 1m) from the wifi base also helps significantly.
I now have a fibre link with TPlink media converters to my main system, which is far superior at enabling detail resolution and natural scale.
I've ordered a netgear GS-108 and an apple airport extreme.
I'll let you know how I get on.

Hi John. I guess its your intention to put your current router/modem into modem only mode and slot the extreme in as the router, otherwise the purchase of the extreme is, well, extreme.
There are plenty of great wireless access point out there. In my experience Asus for instance left the apple AC extreme in the weeds for speed.

Sorry! I did purchase the AC extreme but sent it back within the 14 day limit for a full refund. That being said I am sure they have updated software etc since then I imagine its much better.
But it is a full router, so if you intend leaving your ISP router in place, most of it is wasted and you could save around half by getting a dedicated wireless access point.
For what its worth, I decided to ultra geek and utilise a Dell pc into a PFSense router, so I now use a AC87u Asus router just as a wireless access point. But I already had it. But again most of its core use is being wasted.
Its like using a uniti just for a UPNP feed if you get what I mean.
From reading a lot of posts on the forum over the last year, I think there have been more problems caused by poor routers than by poor wireless access points. Of course I may be wrong, but that is my impression, and partly that is what lies behind my belief that using switches to handle the traffic and leaving the router to handle allocation of IP addresses, internet access and wifi connectivity to iPad etc for controlling Naim streamers Is the way to a quiet life of listening to music and not worrying about the technicalities.
So if there are never any problems of discovery, then I say by all means use an Apple Extreme as a WAP, but if discovery is ever an issue, then I think it is worth trying using the Extreme as a router as well.
