Sad, sad news. Please be brave!

Yes, I have just read the news and have to confirm that it is true. Phil Collins is coming out of retirement. Just when we thought we could carry on with our lives. Please be on your guard and warn your children of the devastating effects of getting anywhere near any of his ear and soul damaging material.
Be strong as this may hopefully be just a passing phase!
I'm not with you on that - he produced some excellent music with Genesis and solo. Following the herd doesn't necessarily prove much but selling over 100 million records ain't bad going. Like many artists before him, he defo fell away with the last stuff he issued, but I'm willing to wait and see what he comes up with - Jason Bonham on drums should provide plenty of drive in that department.

+1, some of his Genesis stuff was good and his early solo music was well received in its day. There seems to be a trend of deriding musicians who were once very popular, including the likes of Collins and Dire Straits etc but I'm quite happy to listen without prejudice and make my own judgement. If he tours we will be there because my wife loves his first few albums.
This is why I don't get much into musical discussions. Too much tribalism, too much snobbery.
Great musician - so disagree with your sad news quote. But of course everybody is allowed an opinion.
Mr Collins is an accomplished drummer and so he was while contrbuting to some of Genesis's albums but I do have an issue with his solo stuff.
As for tribalism, those who follow my posts will testify that I have quite an accommodating taste in music styles and musicians. I just cannot stand Phil Collins as a solo/singer "artist" along with Brian freaking Adams and so on.
@dayjay. The things one does for love!

Any anyone else should care? Why?
You like what you like. We all do. But some will just turn it into some kind of shit hurling contest. Odd.

Harry, I could give you a list but what's the point if, as you said, you "don't get involved into musical discussions". I offer no apologies. I do get involved.
Tony. My exact words were "I don't get much into musical discussions".
Nice bit of selective revisionism there.
Says a lot.

You don't know the half of it Tony, the number of Tori Amos and Fish concerts I have been to.....

I'm suprised he's done so well considering he's 'just' a drummer who sings a bit. I've seen him fronting Genesis (last time on the 'Last Domino' tour) and he was a great showman then. I really liked Face Value but then his music started to resemble his album covers, unimaginative and samey. I'm happy to hear Bowie has another LP coming and thought Magazine and Ultravox had the best comeback albums of the past few years.

Ah, and Blur!
Not a fan of Phil Collins apart from a couple of his songs such as Mama and Against all odds.
Rather liked the title and first post of this thread. Quite funny!

I feel your pain. I was once dragged along to a Billy Idol concert. Still have the mental scars...

Yes, Chris. It is just a bit of a laugh but some people here take things farrrrrrrr too seriously!
Personally I think Phil Collins is (for the most part) great.
So I look forward to hearing what will be on offer as soon as he's dusted off his sticks and gargled his vocal cords back into shape.
For me, Another day in Paradise & Mama are standouts.
Another Phil Collins fan here, both from his Genesis days and when went solo. I just hope his new material doesn't disappoint like, for me, Bowie's has.

I’m sure we’re all splitting our sides and slapping our thighs. Using a public access forum to throw insults at someone. Could it be any funnier?
Although I don't imagine Phil Collins gives a toss.
What else don't you like? Come on, make us all piss ourselves.
There seems to be Something in the Air Tonight

You must have a groovy kind of love for Phil, Harry. Sorry, I did not mean to hurt your feelings. Everyone else seem to be cool about it,
My deepest apologies!
Peace!
Ah, and Blur!
They don't count (on my comback criteria) as they weren't chugging away in the 70s!
His playing with Brand X and both his drumming and singing with Genesis up until 'And Then There Were Three' at least should not be underestimated.
Don't like his material post Face Value and Genesis after 1984.
Having said that he always comes over as a nice guy in interviews very down to earth and funny and self depreciating. My first ever gig was Genesis at Knebworth Park in 1978 and it was brilliant. Its a shame Collins made Genesis into the bland pop band and they lost their more atmospheric progressive side. They defiantly lost something when Steve Hackett left in 1977.
Peter Gabriel I like musically alot more.

That about sums it up for me also. I understand he is (was?) a talented arranger to boot.

Ha ha. That's more like it. Actually not a huge fan although he gets status in this house for being 20% of "Classic" Genesis and I thought Brand X was pretty good.
I apologise back for coming off strong. In retrospect I was poking too hard.
As said above, he has always seemed to come off as a rather down to earth, matter of fact bloke who (in the most recent Genesis documentary) said in no uncertain terms that some of what he did was (in his opinion in hindsight) a bit questionable - but very profitable i'm sure.
So, in short, you do have a sense of humour and I was right all along!
Here is something especially for you. One my favourite Genesis tracks.
Great stuff. Hard to believe how dark and edgy it all seemed at the time.
Steve Hackett has (and to a more limited extent still is) toured the old Genesis catalogue and I have to say it's a splendid effort.
Sense of humour? Well, it's all relative I guess....
