New NAP300DR - rant

Posted by: Zeny on 30 October 2015

Just received my new NAP300DR to pair with my 252DR, and guess what... There is no burndy cable in the box!! Seriously pissed off. Great QC Naim.

I have contacted my dealer who promised to rectify the matter urgently but as I'm not in the UK it will probably be a couple of weeks before I can fire up the power amp. This is ridiculous for a 10,000 euro power amp.

Just when i thought this couldn't get any better/funnier we get this classic -

In the world of watches, we are paying for an Omega here not Seiko. I wouldn't accept anything less than perfect condition when I put the new Omega on my wrist.

Grand Seiko are the most technologically advanced and accurate watches on the planet. This includes ALL the Swiss offerings. In watch terms Omega are Logik/Sandstrom in this hifi realm

Sits back and waits ................

Don’t be disrespectful about Sandstrom! Not hifi as such but certainly functional for speech radio ...

I'll bite

Grand Seiko is certainly not behind in technology, prices or accuracy compared to some of the prestigious Swiss brands - such as Omega, Rolex or even Jaeger Le-Coultre. In percepted brand value however they still have a long way to go, which is unfair considering that Seiko really is the closest one can get to the definition of a proper manufacture. They even produce the grease and oil in-house.

Grand Seiko also uses a stricter tolerance than the typical Swiss COSC, but that in itself doesn't mean much as some of the Swiss watch producers use a stricter tolerance. Their hi-beat and also quartz series are both fantastic watches and with wonderful understated classic look. Very expensive but worth every penny.

But you cannot argue they make better watches just because you happen to like them very well. They are possibly better, but I'd rather say as good as ..... for example Omega. Don't forget that already in the seventies Omega made the marvellous Marine Chronometre watch which still is among the most precise of all non thermo-compensated watches. And Omega's 8500 based calibres are among the most stabile and precise mechanical calibres ever made and usually scoring well better than COSC tolerance. Now you can add proper anti-magnetic properties as well. The total cost for developing and tooling the new chronograph was around 60 million Swiss Franc. That's about 40 million GBP. Fact is, if you are looking for one of the most hi tech and prestigious watches to last you for a generation or two with proper care and services, then you can just as well go for Grand Seiko, Omega, Chopard .....

Btw, you can now have the pleasure of having both your Naim amplifier as well as your wrist watch serviced every now and then.....but can one get hold of tailor made socks, and can they be serviced?

I am staggered that Naim don't send them over Fed Ex or DHL considering you have spent £10 OOO with them.It would be a nice gesture to put things right for you.

Maybe they have - it sounded to me as if Naim's response was headed that way - bearing in mind we have no idea of the OP's location, and so how lquick might be the quickest practical delivery.

Proper watch.

Hand made and keeps a minute a month in spite of being made 135 years ago in Britain.

And it will test your hearing to listen. Almost silent, like a Coventry Daimler ...

Do you have insider info? I thought it was Tristan da Cuna, the island with population of something like 256, three weeks travel from South Africa, served about once a week, where they had to send to South Africa for more women a while back...

Zeny, I AM WITH YOU! It is poor service, and NO excuse is good enough these days. Too many on this and other forums are disciples for the brand. For example, I bought a pair of JBL S4700 speakers @ $12K and found one spike wouldn't screw on correctly. The thread was not cut accurately on one thread and made my experience stressful. I wrote a comment on the JBL forum and like you, I was branded a cry baby and fool. I advised them that is probably because those parts were made in Mexico, and to act their age or butt out! Secondly, I had a problem with my retailer regarding my order for multiple Chord Signature Aray cables, which were supposed to arrive in 2 weeks, yet took 9 weeks! It was NOT Chord's fault, it was the lazy distributor. That said, after I complained the MD for Chord e-mailed me and apologized, he then sent me TWO packs (8) 70mm Silent Mounts worth $1400AUD for FREE! That is the professionalism and care taken by Chord, and I will never forget it. You have every right to complain here, I have assumed you already spoke to your retailer so it makes sense to advise us of your disappointment. It doesn't make sense to have your thread hijacked by devotees or watch enthusiasts. I hope you will find enjoyment when it arrives, I have with my speakers and cables. When spending a small fortune it hurts to be let down, I'm sure those who buy a Jaguar don't have the hurt of discovering the battery wasn't included. There are too many other fine brands to choose from.

I just want to be clear for all here, as that is what your post could imply.

The OP wrote in his first post that the dealer told him it would take two weeks to get the missing cable.

In his latest post, after my post, Zeny wrote that the latest update was that he may get the missing cable by next Tuesday, which is roughly 10 days after he first notified the dealer of the miss item.

The question I have is why does it take this long?

Couldn't Naim simply grab a new cable from the inventory and then fedex the cable to Zeny as soon as they discovered the mistake? The delayed response to help a clearly very frustrated high spending customer is strange and unhelpful. It may shed some insights to how inefficiently the business is run.

Lastly, I hope the PE owners sees this and fix the problem.

Unless by 'next Tuesday' the OP had meant the coming Tuesday, i.e just started in UK... ( some people express days differently from others, this phrase being one that gets used in different ways). We shall hopefully find out! And maybe find out how widely wrong - or not - are the guesses as to location

Posted on: 02 November 2015 by Zeny

Latest update is that Fedex will pick up the burndys from Naim on Tuesday 3.11.2015 and ship via Fedex International Economy. According to the Fedex website this mode of delivery will take 4-6 business days to reach me in South East Asia. So my dealer's estimate of next Tuesday is about right.

Aha, a location by region at last!

I'm sure any number of UK forum members would have sacrificed themselves to act as personal courier to get it to you by today, had we been asked (and a few days' stopover to recover from jet lag offered!)

Posted on: 02 November 2015 by Zeny

Thanks Innocent, you are very kind.

I was actually hoping that Naim would ask some of their larger dealers, for eg. Hong Kong, to send it over instead of sending it all the way from the UK. If Hong Kong sends it, it will probably take just one business day. I'm sure these larger dealers have some 300's in open boxes. But who am I to ask right?

The shipping doc says the parcel is 3kg. I was secretly hoping to be surprised with a free gift, but with that weight it seems unlikely and I am not holding my breath.

Well from the Zeny's latest update, we can finally deduce that Naim has responded under this circumstances fairly and reasonably by sending the missing cable via Fedex. As many as 4-6 business days are acceptable considering the recipient is not in Europe zone. On another similar note, not long ago my dealer ordered & paid for GBP19,000 high end home theater pre-amplifier RS20i DATASAT but discovered the brand new unit came with a faulty HDMI board which rendered it not operational. Upon emailing them, DATASAT was quick to response by sending a new HDMI board without even have to verify the faulty board. My dealer received the replacement part within 10 business days and he was very pleased with their customer service.

From this we know that mistakes or errors do happen everywhere but the most important thing is how quick one response to it so that things can be restored to the original position. Certainly Naim have to tighten the inspections at packaging department in order not to let it becomes a big issue because it is the last department before products are handed to customers. Credit should also be given to Richard Dane for his due diligence alerting Naim HQ. This should earn him a second "promotion" in Naim organisation

Zeny, I am sure it will be a very much worth the wait knowing that what level of musical happiness the NAP300DR will bring to you. Congratulations for the new toy and remember to always come back to this thread with your detail reviews. I am pretty sure all of us are intrigued to find out. It is unbelievable some replies here were rude, immature or sarcastic comment to ask the OP to sell and leave the "public" forum. Lets move on....

I'm not surprised.  I've never had a problem with Naim gear myself, but I see them help people on the forums all the time like this, and in short order.  Rega as well.

I guess if I could even afford a 300 DR I'd be upset, but I I'm not upset I can't afford one.  Maybe its just something folks who can afford them get upset about?

Take that back, I can afford one.  And it would be the only thing in the room, sitting there on the floor by itself.

Naim Burndy Guy's Wife:  "Honey, you left some ugly cable on the seat of your car, I brought it in for you last night.  BTW, why are you home from the factory so early?"

Sounds like someone was busy massaging their burndy when they should have been installing it into a box.

Posted on: 02 November 2015 by Sneaky SNAIC

The Burndy works better if you massage it before installing it in said box.

Where is the dealer in this? The OP I believe bought this from the dealer not Naim directly...it should be down to the dealer to remedy.. It's great Naim have intervened to the OP directly.. But as I say this should have been the dealer's issue to manage. Initially to check the devices had shipped correctly and then resolve any issues. It appears unless I missed something on the thread, they have simply acted as a box shifter.. That's a lot of margin for taking the payment, raising an order and shifting the boxes.

Naim should deliver direct using drone.

This is the Statement delivery drone prototype:

Oiled up, topless massage, full body massage, which does it prefer?

In the old days of naim this would have probably been sent by the fastest post, regardless of cost. If I had just paid many thousands for a piece of kit that was incomplete then I would have asked for, or even demanded this service, as that is part of what we are paying for.

Things do go wrong from time to time but its how they are dealt with when they do. I personally think over a week wait for economy delivery is poor customer service from naim on this occasion.
