WAV downloading issue
Posted by: Mr THX on 01 November 2015
Hi,
Anyone else have this issue when buying & downloading a album in WAV?
I'm running a Synology 215 with MinimServer have had no problem with any FLAC files but on the last two instances I've decided to try the WAV file the album doesn't show up in the NAIM app (even though I know its on the server).... if I run 'show log' on Minim Watch I get the message below?
You have invalid (incorrectly formed) metadata blocks.
Try using a metadata editor to edit (or remove and replace) the metadata.
Another option is simply to download in FLAC and transcode to WAV. The sound will be the same as playing the WAV versions, but it all seems so much easier to manage.

You have a solution but you have not ID'd the cause, this should not happen & I would really be concerned to find out what's going on. I have never had any issues downloading WAV - funnily tho' I have found issues with badly formatted FLAC metadata when I had no buying choice other than FLAC, I was able to correct it OK prior to converting to WAV
Yes indeed, this has nothing to do with WAV it's more a case, it would appear, of the quality control of your download reseller. Might be better to change retailer than format.....

Hi Both,
This has happened the last twice I downloaded from Qobuz, so not sure changing retailer is an option? I do think the problem could be with Minim Server? As when I checked running Synology 'Media Server' I can see and play the albums (although it fails to show any artwork) .... very strange...this isn't an option though as I like Minim Server to transcode etc etc
Agree with you both though I need to get to the bottom of it....
I would let the reseller know.
if you have dbpoweamp Windows file explorer extensions can you see the extended ID3 meta data in the wav file?
I use MinimServer with both id3 and listinfo metadata in my wav files and I have no issue - but am curious as to why your other media server works.
Art work in WAV files is very non standard and so I wouldn't rely on it. Use the artwork in the album folder - just ensure the artwork is named correctly for the media server - Folder.jpg usually works and is what I use for Asset and MinimServer

Ah ha Qobuz !!! Same retailer I had FLAC format issues with.
Are you using the Qobuz download tool or downloading the zip package; the download tool does not bring in the art .jpg & if it's not had the art embedded in the metadata, then you might need to go back & get it & add/edit in. The zipped packets IME always need some form of editing .....
Finally I use Synology with 'Media Server' & as I said before I don't have issues other than minor occasional metadata editing. I prefer it over Minimserver & also only use the 'Folder View' without seeing art until I open the album.

With Qobuz I try to avoid using their desktop download facility and try to use the Qobuz Downloader which has always worked for me. Up till three GB this is the best and most stable solution they offer.
The last album I downloaded from Qobuz had some very dodgy tags in it and needed a lot of work doing to render it correctly. This has demoted Qobuz to my supplier of last resort. Their stuff isn't unusable but it's getting tatty.
It could be that FLAC transcoded will sound the same as WAV. But I wouldn't bank on it until you've heard for yourself.
I download as FLAC and convert to WAVE using DBPowramp.
This works best for me - fewest tagging issues, however I don't do transcoding on the fly, because I use Synology Media Server (the Synology transcoding doesn't do gapless, but as a simple server it's very reliable).
Depending on how much one downloads . . . this is just something one can put up with IMHO. I agree with letting the vendor know, but I think that we'll all have to have some patience as the retail / vendors part of the industry is lagging behind the technology.
Very strange this as if I run the two previous WAV downloads through 'Metadatics' adding only album art and not changing or taking anything else away (to try and sort the Minim Server error report) it loads up to the server and plays fine ??
