Sub woofer connection question

Posted by: Davis on 01 November 2015

i am trying to decide between a pre/amp combo and an integrated one.

For the integrates, looking at the SuperUniti or the Uniti 2, which I see both have specific sub out connectors in the back. But for the pre/amp combo, I am looking at the 172 pre and the 155 or 200 for the amp but it's not obvious where to connect the sub.

I assume it it goes to one of the pre outputs, and the other goes to the amp? It can out both pre outputs at the same time? If so, is there a preference as to which goes with what?

thanks in advance!

You can get the answer to this by looking at the reference manual for the 172 which is available at https://www.naimaudio.com/site..._english_issue1e.pdf

It's on page 4. The answer is yes both preamp outputs are enabled at the same time and they say you should use the DIN output for a subwoofer using a connector supplied by your Naim dealer.

Naim have all the manuals for current products available for download on their website incidentally.

Depending on what sub you have, you may want to consider connecting it to the speaker terminals. This is almost certainly a much cheaper option as you can do it with any cheap speaker cable, rather than a long DIN/RCA cable which is going to be expensive. Obviously this is only an option if you have a sub with high level inputs.

Going the high level route with any integrated amplifier can be quite a shock in what it can bring to the performance. Just introduced a new Rel T7i to my outfit. It's superb.

Just be sure that you connect a high level connection from the terminals on the back of the speakers rather than a Naim power amp.
