Files all over the place on Naim app with Twonky/Buffalo

Posted by: Steve Smith on 01 November 2015

I am streaming from my Superuniti using a Buffalo Linkstation with built in Twonky server. Andrew Everard had advised me that the Naim app and Twonky do not "play nicely together" and it appears to be the case. My files have become more and more disorganised on the Naim app, with wrong album lists appearing, double recordings and other issues. It's a right old hotch potch.

I am wondering how to proceed. Is Minim server the way to go? Could I install this myself as a non IT person? Any other ideas? I am now sometimes resorting to using CDs. Quelle horreur!

I suspect you'd be better buying a Synology or QNAP and putting minim on that. You can, I believe, put minim on the buffalo, but it's not straightforward. Have a look at the Minimserver forum.

I'm sorry but that's not correct at all. Naim app and Twonky are fine together. Some fancy functions are not supported but that won't affect something as basic as playing the right tune!

Powered down your NAS/SU recently? Cleared your UPNP cache? Checked and confirmed the metadata in the files you store?

By all means try another server software. Twonky is not as feature rich as some, and if everything works it is possible the process of installing the new software (softstarts, resets, whatever!) would have cured the original problem anyway. I run Twonk on 3 devices and ALL my problems have been caused by network glitches, metadata, apps not picking up changes etc.

I found Twonky to be very problematic. Even before testing it with Naim, I had several other streamers in the house from Denon and Sony and generally Twonky would cause the Sony units to lock up when accessing it and/or suffer a lot of internal timeouts for the others.

I spent some time recompiling the required libs from source but this didn't help. I may have been inclined to persevere further but the lack of any meaningful documentation or Twonky support meant that life was too short to spend troubleshooting it. The error log was also fairly ambiguous as to where the timeouts were occurring or as a result of what specific request. I considered the $20 license fee to have slipped from my pocket into a drain.

Heard excellent things about Minim. Not had a minute of trouble since I moved to Asset for audio streaming and Plex for video either.

I could have updated my Twonky version by paying for a license but as it 'just worked' I never bothered. It seems I may have dodged a bullet by sticking with the old formula, change is not always for the better (I guess).

Hmm. Somewhat conflicting advice, but thank you for replying. In the short term I shall reboot the NAS drive, maybe re-download the Naim app and see how I go. What a shame it just doesn't all work smoothly.

I too run twonky and don't have issues. Recently I had a problem with my NAS device (manufacturer licenses Twonky) and got excellent support from the twonky team. Version 7 now has improved metadata categorization and supports album art for DSD.

Don't know your device but a dB reorg/rescan would be the starting point

My Twonky occasionally goes wonky.  A 'refresh' of files and reboot of the app usually sorts it out.
