Power completely gone on HDX

Posted by: Kevin Rodgers on 03 November 2015

i have a 2008 vintage HDX which until now has given flawless service.  But now I find that it has simply died - no front panel light etc.  Plug fuse is fine.  When I switch on the power using the switch on the back of the HDX there is a slight buzzing noise coming from the area where the power cable connects - this goes silent when the power is switched off.  I note that there are a couple of 240v fuses in a pull out 'tray' underneath the cable connection (is one a spare?) but they look good.   Any clues what might have occurred and if there is an easy fix?

Looks like it may be a dealer job, but worth checking (with the power off) that the Burndy link plug is plugged in fully in and seated correctly. Pull it out and plug back in again to be sure.

Reseated the plug, turned the unit back on and - pop!  A very audible noise from the back of the unit and a distinct electrical burning smell.  Curiously, the 240v fuses still look fine.  Dealer tomorrow I think.    Anyone any experience of something similar and, if so, was the hard drive ok? (my concern is a disk corruption of some kind).

There are two power supplies within the HDX - one supplies the analogue circuitry and the other the computer boards. Most likely it is this one that has failed.

This happened to me earlier this year with similar symptoms to those you describe (but not the burning smell). It's a return to factory job I'm afraid.

Whilst in dock Naim will give it a thorough going over. On mine they also replaced the CD drive as they found it to be out of spec. and made another modification (mod. 129 whatever that was).

Mine is an SSD model (without the internal drives). I doubt you need to worry about your drives. Make sure you keep backups in future though.

Hope that helps.

Kevin, sorry to hear that you have issues with your HDX. After all it's a wonderful machine...

Please keep us informed about how things are working out...

Many regards,

Michel

Took it to my local Hifi shop (Grahams in Islington - great shop, btw) and they sent it off to naim to give it a going over on the bench.  Hopefully will be back in a week or so.  To be fair I've owned naim gear for twenty years and this is literally the first fault I've ever had. stuff is usually bulletproof.
