Speakers against wall in large room

Posted by: Bigfoot on 04 November 2015

Hi,

i am am looking to replace my Linn Katan having upgraded my electronics to ND5/202/200. I have a large listening room, but speakers must be against wall (kitchen diner, which extends 4 m behind the photographed area) . Considering used Allae, Neat Elite, Kudos C2 or 20 with budget of up to £1500. Speakers 3m apart and from listening area.

suggestions welcome!

I really my Credo and they go up close against the wall.  The Allae is the upgraded "Super" Credo so if you can get a pair of those jump on 'em.  I use NACA5.  If I ever upgrade the Credo it would most likely be to Allae.

Naim are (or were) the masters of 'up against the wall' speaker design: just keep trawling the second hand market.

If you like your Katans but are simply looking for something better, I highly recommend ATC SCM7s. Cut from similar sonic cloth – and they even look somewhat similar – but an altogether better speaker. More lively and expressive, and far better than they have a right to be at the price.

I made that very switch several months ago, and am very happy. Bonus: my SCM7s sounded better on the Katan stands than on a pair of expensive mass loaded stands I bought specially, which are now gathering dust in my basement.

How large is the room? Guru qm10.2 is designed to go up against the wall and provide a huge sound for their size. They match nicely with the Naim sound.

Speakers are hugely subjective so as always, the best advice is listen for yourself, and in your room if possible.

ATC scm7 is a great speaker but not really designed to fill large rooms.

Good point. In my situation, the speakers are in a bay at the end of a narrow room. The real sweet spot is about 6 to 8 feet from the speakers - much further than that, things get a bit diffuse.

I agree that the SCM7 is at its best close up, but in terms of filling a larger space it punches well above its weight. It has extraordinarily good power handling for its size. Even if its "room filling capacity" can be bettered by other small speakers, unless the OP is really looking for something fundamentally different from the Katan, they ought to consider them.

I was very keen on trying out the Gurus, but the possibility of an audition here in the Pacific Northwest is close to zero.

It's a really big room, listening area 6m across, but firing down an open plan kitchen / diner of 12m. I sit where the sofa is shown, about 3m from the speakers so realistically looking to fill the listening area.

Hi again, any views on Neat Elite SX?
