NS-O1

about two years ago I upgraded from a unity serve to NS-01,because the unity serve caused nothing but problems. Since upgrading the problems have intensified. first issue was a bad disk, next was a total shutdown and now all the techs from the dealer can't help. Naim will replace the unit or give me a NDX. If I accept the NDX I need a NAS which I really didn't want in the first place. What would be the best choice.
I would go for an NDX and buy a NAS, although what have you been using to stream the media off your NS01?
Take the NDX, which is really good. Then get a Synology or QNAP nas, install Minim or Asset and off you go. If I can cope with a nas and a streamer, anyone can.
Anyway, lots of people on the forum will be very happy to help you with an NDX/Nas setup. (I use a Synology and use the Media Server software which comes with it.) It'll be more hassle in terms of ripping CDs but, once you get used to it, considerably more flexible.
Have you been using the NS01 as a server (to say a streamer) or as a player (using the digital or analogue output)?
In general the NS01 should be pretty reliable - the HDX is basically an NS01 with baubles on and (in general) seems pretty reliable. I don't see why Naim can't sort it out for you.
If you keep it you will retain the convenience and performance of an excellent ripper but lose the flexibility in playback that the NDX provides - streaming services, HLS radio streams, dac inputs.
What would you choose if you were starting from scratch? Reliability aside is the NS01 still the best fit for your requirements? Would the HDX provide a better one box solution if you could get one of those?
Hard drives have a finite lifespan and the ones in the HDX/NS01/NS02/NS03 will die eventually. Its not just a case of swapping out the drives - the units have to be sent back to NAIM or an authorized and qualified service center as the OS is located on the main drive. Go with the NAS setup and either an SSD HDX or NDX to future proof your investment..
Why do people think ssd is the answer to everything. Ssd fails. Just because they use ram chip instead does not at all make them safer.
Since Naim is very silent about what if any Development will happenwith the servers, and the streamers on the other hand are very actively in Development, should I replace my ns01 today I would probably go for an ndx, or a streamer from another Company to be used with my ndac.

And one more thing. I bought my ns01 in June 2011, and the cd drive died in august 2014.
I bought a Readynas Duo v2 in the summer of 2012. A few months ago I began to get warnings from the firmware on the nas about damaged sectors from the nas.
So I bought a 3 tb drive optiminzed to be used in a nas.
So both systems have failed, but since I can replace the disk in the nas without sending it to Naim the Price for a nas feilure is much lower.

Thanks everyone for your comments, they were helpful. I have decided to take the streamer. My dealer will now deliver a NDS and will deliver it to my home and set up the NAS. he also suggests that I disconnect the 555ps from the dac and connect it to the NDS. IS this a good idea?
Do you mean NDS? If so, it needs the power supply to be able to work.

+1 it's simple, easy and stable.

As HH says, the NDS has no internal PS, so it will need your 555PS in order to work.
The NDS has digital inputs, so unless you have a lot of digital sources, you will no longer need your Naim DAC. The NDS/555PS is a replacement for your NS01->DAC/555PS.
Good luck!
