down size time

Posted by: ray davis on 08 November 2015

Sadly i have to down size my system due to a forthcoming move At present i have

Lp12 Peter swain built hicap2 lingo 3

202 /Napsc / Flatcap XS/ 200

CD5i

SBLs

By the looks of it I may have to go to a one Box job.

I intend to keep the LP12  Lingo. CD player not that bothered as i do not really own many Cds. So Suggestions would be appreciated. Smaller Speakers will probably be required as well.

Don't do it

If I where you I would just keep it to the speakers, getting rid of the rest would be a shame. But at least keep the lp12

cheers guys, i am totally gutted believe me. Years of hard work to build up then probably see it go.

Ray

You could consider a Nait 3 replacing the existing amp combo - its cheap and good, it should run the SBL's quite well, these speakers do not provide large amount of cash so try to keep them, also smaller speakers might take up larger footprint as these might not go straight up a wall

If you need to part with SBL's I'd suggest some Bookshelfs, Royds, Kan's, Epos or Rega

If you have MM on the LP12 maybe a Brio amp or insert 522 Cards into the Nait, indeed a complete Rega setup could be a choice on the cheapskate

LP 12 has prefix s, nima, 20x2, khan , kore, trampolin, lingo 3  hence reason its staying.

So sorry to hear this Ray, I hope that you can avoid it. If you do need to do it I would suggest a Nait 2 and taking some time to find speakers to suit the new room.

Cheers Chris, I had a Nait two long time ago cracking amp. Wifey is telling me to calm down.

By downsize, do you mean something that is physically smaller, or something that will free up cash?

Posted on: 08 November 2015 by ray davis

downsize as in i may not have the physical space. We got three months roughly to find somewhere. Once i have found somewhere, all will be a bit more clearer.  Supernait 2 ?

Posted on: 08 November 2015 by hungryhalibut

It's highly likely that a Supernait 2 will sound no worse, and may be better than the existing amplifier. All you need to do is have a single rack with the Lp12, Supernait and CD player. The SBLs take up less space than Kans on stands, and are prefect for a small room as they go hard against the wall. Newer bookshelf speakers, which are almost all rear ported, take up far more space. The Prefix can be powered happily from the Supernait 2.

So I reckon you could actually get something better, or at the very least no worse, so there's no need to worry.

the Hicap powers the Prefix s so would like to keep. what i may have to get rid of could nearly pay for a brand new Supernait

Personally I'd go the SN2 route, but for the same space you could try a NAC72/140 combination. You could use the phono boards in the 72 to free up even more space. i have both SN2 and 72/140 (with HiCap) and although I prefer the SN2 sound wise I can see how others might prefer the older olives.

I have a prefix S on the Lp12, so phono boards do not matter.

About 6 years ago I downsized from a 202/200/napsc/Hicap to a Supernait.

Far from taking a sound quality hit it went the other way and I far preferred it.

The current Supernait is reputably better so if I were you I would go in that direction.

As the SN2 has a DR power supply for its preamp built in, you may find that the prefix works better powered by the SN than by its own Hicap. Should you go the SN route, you can try for yourself, and maybe have another box to sell, and another shelf not required.

think i will have a look, i like the SBLs got them on word from Chris and i havnt looked back.

Sorry to hear that Ray. Do think long and hard about parting with your SBL's. They are a wonderful loudspeaker, the like of which we shall not see again, from Naim or anyone else. If you're moving to a smaller home, their boundary-placement footprint is smaller than some stand-mounts which normally need some back-space too.

I have a pair of SBL's which are arguably too good for my study system, but they have a sentimental attachment with regard to their original owner - a friend who died way before his time.

So ............ I run them (to great effect) off a Nait XS. Even a Nait 2 will drive them just fine too (I had one) within sensible sound-level limits.

Good luck for the future.

John.

going to strip the whole lot down next weekend and see a way around this, Stack mybe 4ft tall.

Posted on: 08 November 2015 by Steve J

Good luck with whatever you decide Ray. The LP12, Supernait2 and keeping the SBLs sounds the smartest move.

Can you get a home demo on a SN2 from your dealer?  That may alleviate some of the unknown for you from the decision.  If you try it and are happy, you can downsize with a clear conscience and the changeover might even be relatively revenue neutral depending on what you get to sell.

Posted on: 08 November 2015 by ray davis

been told to strip the lot down its on two tiers. rebuild it as certain parts i can hide away such as napsc and sonos. it may end up being about 4ft with lp12 on top . weekend job.

If that doesn't work try the Rega Osiris. Very impressive, as is the Isis. I haven't heard their reference phono, but know someone with good ears who prefers it to the Superline.

Posted on: 08 November 2015 by hungryhalibut

There is no way you want an LP12 on a four foot stack. Get that Supernait....

…….or get a wallshelf

Indeed. Every time I see that Avatar, it makes me smile.
