down size time

Posted by: ray davis on 08 November 2015

Sadly i have to down size my system due to a forthcoming move At present i have

Lp12 Peter swain built hicap2 lingo 3

202 /Napsc / Flatcap XS/ 200

CD5i

SBLs

By the looks of it I may have to go to a one Box job.

I intend to keep the LP12  Lingo. CD player not that bothered as i do not really own many Cds. So Suggestions would be appreciated. Smaller Speakers will probably be required as well.

It does suit Chris.

How many boxes do you need to lose? You could keep the 200, and replace the CD5, 202, NAPSC and Flatcap with a 272. (In fact, I'm amazed HH has pitched in but not suggested this!)

I am not clear why you need to lose boxes when they are in a stack anyway.  When I moved my system into my study I went through a simular thought process and planned to get a supercap to replace a 112/150/flat cap.  I ended up with a 250/252/super cap.  After all, the floor footprint is the same, it is just the stack that is taller.  But I downsized the speakers to something that would sound good in the smaller space - PMC 20-22s in my case.

We have a 500 system now but could happily live with a UQ2 and a pair of Blumenstein Thrashers in a smaller room.  My son has this setup at school and it is amazing how good it sounds and how flexible it is.   I don't know if it will accommodate your phono section but I would bet you could make it work.  If you hold your speakers constant you will definitely need a larger solution like a SuperNait2 or a SuperUniti.  We have all thought about downsizing.  Be thankful there is a great sounding path forward with Naim.

… presumably because they are currently in two stacks and there probably won't be as much room

You can still have a single taller stack!

But another option would be a NAC172 or 272 to replace the CD5i, Flatcap, and 202 - using NAS (for rippoed CDs) and Streaming as a substitute for CDs.

While the 272 is the most paradigm shifting product that Naim has produced for ages, and just because I think it's just wonderful, I'm not going to recommend it if it's not the best option. With an LP12 with prefix, a CD player and the desire to have fewer boxes, and seemingly no desire to stream, a Supernait  2 makes far more sense. It will power the prefix, and once you add the retained CD player, you get a perfect three box (turntable, amp, CD player) setup that will sound no worse than the pile of boxes it replaces.

Fair comment HH, I had failed to notice that the OP has a Prefix. My logic was that he said he wasn't bothered about CDs, so could have replaced 3 large boxes and a NAPSC with just one box without loss of sound quality. Plus he might discover that he likes the extra functions on a 272 - iRadio, FM, UPnP, Tidal....all the stuff I never knew I wanted until I bought a streamer. But yes, having to keep the Flatcap probably kills the idea.

thanks for all the comments, i have a few ideas to bung the NAPSC and SONOS on the floor under the rack. I shelf gained, then rebuild it all. Wall shelf great idea possible the Vulcan. I will have to wait till we move and see if its viable to put a shelf up. Speakers point taken about the space they take up, and i do like the SBLs. Sunday will be play day .

You could consider a Nait 3 replacing the existing amp combo - its cheap and good, it should run the SBL's quite well, these speakers do not provide large amount of cash so try to keep them,

I find this a clever suggestion. I have had a Nait 3 with the SBLs, b_lund is right.

Hmmm - personally I would rather use a Nait 2

Nostalgia... My vote goes to Nait 3!

all on one stack,,,, top to bottom  Lp12, hicap,cd,202,FCxs,200, Lingo 3on floor underneath. No i dont need a step ladder. Plus the dogs tail cant hit the LP12.

How does it sound Ray?

Is the FCXS doing much for the sound of the 202? I prefer the supply straight from my 200. A HC-DR is a different matter though.

You should try a Naim XS powered by a HiCap and run your LP12 photo stage off that. I had that combo in a second system and it was epic.

Powering the prefix from aux2 and the 202 from the HiCap could lose you a shelf if it gets too wobbly.

Posted on: 16 November 2015 by ChrisSU

.....or for yet another box-saving suggestion, replace the NAP200 with a new 200DR, and power the 202 from that. This gives the 202 a DR power supply that might improve on the Flatcap.

^  Fella's got that already with his Nap200 imo.

I can recommend a Supernait 2 as a very neat, compelling and musical solution. I was also surprised by its power levels, where I  find myself listening at quarter to. I also have a mid range LP12 with Prefix S as a source and it works a treat. As a one-amp solution it has been very well engineered and a credit to the design team at Naim.

it actually sounds pretty dam good. I cant tell any difference at all. The Hicap has to be up as it feeds the prefix. But its all on one stack and working pretty dam good. As pointed out it easier to cue up the nima being higher.
