S U P E R L U M I N A - Is this the biggest improvement ever?

Posted by: Martin.L on 08 November 2015

I naively used to assume that the NAC A5 are perfect...

Just got the speaker cables and could not believe that cables could make this difference.

Clearly these cables need a good warm up and run-in before they are going to approach their optimum sound and I have been told that it takes one week for them to really start to disappear behind the music. Yet from the off with only day’s warm up this upgrade delivered a more musical result than the majority of others.

The system now creates an effect of a non-electronic device, the end result gives the overall feel of a much more realistic space. The wider and deeper soundstage has very consistent perspectives.

These luminas changed the system, it became a variety of moods expressed in tones that are almost endless, they depend actually upon the great working together of all the tonal attributes– color, quality, pitch, and loudness.

The heavy tones assert their will with a more insistent energy; the long tones upon which we linger make a deeper and more lasting impression; while the light and short tones in contrast become points of mere passing and transition.

The contrasts between piano and forte – loudness that brings the tones so near that they may seem threatening in their insistence; softness that makes them seem far away and dreamlike.

The treble is delicate - sweet and clear. Voices are strongly holographic, female singers do not screech and are outstandingly articulate.

The energy it managed to extract from the albums was nothing short of astounding.

It also preserved the ability to put the music before the sound...

It makes you want to keep on listening! can't get to sleep.

What a great project.

Good job naim,

Martin

Good to hear that the ' Emperors new clothes' seem to be rather a keeper!  ATB Peter

This does not sound like a man indifferent about going back to NAC A5.

Yeah it's a slippery slope!

Richard,

I told you it was hard to give the cables back. I only had them on loan for 4 days, after two weeks you will not want to hand them back

I spoke with David yesterday, he must have some good contacts at Naim to get you a loan pair of 9m cables.

Enjoy

Kevin

Hi Iron Cobra,

I think you are right as the more I listen the more I like it.

And I do thank David for making the loan happen.

I have had the RCA/DIN on my Urika for 4 weeks now, what a revelation. 300DR booked in next year, interesting times.

Posted on: 20 November 2015 by FangfossFlyer

Yeah I have a DR upgrade and service booked for next year but there is no 4-5 pin DIN SL for my Superline.

Richard

Now listening o Neil and Bluenote Cafe

It's ironic that Urika owners can benefit from the SL IC but us Naim Superline owners, as yet, can't.

Trickle down takes time

Richard/Steve,

Maybe time to look at the urika again?

The RCA/DIN lifts everything

Posted on: 22 November 2015 by FangfossFlyer

I don't think so as I have had two extended home loans and two different dealer dems and I much prefer the Superline in my system and for my music, the engagement and enjoyment it gives me.

Each to their own preference of course.

Still grooving to those SL speaker cables for another week :-)

Pleased you're enjoying the SL speaker cables Richard. Remember 3m sounds just as good as 9m so worth considering a reorganisation of your system.

I'm undecided at present about the Urika. It would be nice to reduce the box count but ............

Steve

Posted on: 22 November 2015 by FangfossFlyer

Shame that 9m is not 3 x better than 3m!

Richard

Of course the ultimate (?) answer to speaker cable and box count reduction is not to have any and go for a Linn Exakt?

After you Richard. Haven't been convinced as yet.

Posted on: 22 November 2015 by Iron Cobra

I changed from superline/hicap/hiline to urika. Urika is far better IMO. Exact? not convinced either. Interested in Booplinth for LP12 have dem at SORG in 2 weeks

And a Superline/SupercapDR is far better than a Superline/Hicap. Therein lies the problem. Richard and I have done direct comparisons of SL/SC with Urika together and the difference was small but the SL/SC won it for the two of us. The Urika was very good with Jazz and acoustic but old hippies like Richard and myself preferred the raw emotion with rock music conveyed by the SL/SC which was a bit lacking with the Urika.

Posted on: 22 November 2015 by FangfossFlyer

Will be interesting if a SL 4-5 pin DIN (when it is launched) makes a difference as I am convinced there is even more to come from the Superline.

For example airplugs, Z plugs, Z-cyro all made a difference never mind Supercaps and Supercap DR...

Richard

p.s It is a bit like Marshall guitar amps compared to what went before for us 'old hippies'

Posted on: 22 November 2015 by Chris Dolan

…. and it was mostly the DR bit of SupercapDR that (in my view) was most significant in partly closing the performance gap to the Urika

Posted on: 22 November 2015 by Steve J

Each to their own Chris, as you were the only one of the four of us to prefer the Urika.

Posted on: 22 November 2015 by tonym

The Urika is by no means "far better" than the Superline. I've owned both, the Superline with Z-Foil resistors. It's a tricky call. The Superline majors on ballsy, rocking music but the Urika is better on more subtle stuff. It really is a matter of personal taste.

Everything's a compromise - I do wish folks wouldn't rubbish one because they've chosen another.

It is close. I did much prefer the Superline on one track  and in many respects the Superline/SupercapDR gives the Ekos SE a sense of mellifluousness that it lacks (imo) with the Urika - and which makes it rather beguiling combination. It is of course very good.

Anyway things change and now I'm wondering - if it fits the Urika and/or Chord make a 4/5 din for thre Suerline - where the Chord Music might fit in the price v performance mix aginast the Super ARAY and the Superline equivalents

Posted on: 22 November 2015 by Iron Cobra

We all don't have to be old hippies to like rock music. The urika does ballsy rock IMO.

If it takes a supercap and Z-Foil  resistors to make a superline only marginally better than a urika judging by recent posts then pound for pound the urika is the better option.

In that case I was right the urika is far better than superline/hicap, not that the superline is rubbish.

Anyway, we digress from the thread. RCA/DIN works wonders on a urika

Posted on: 22 November 2015 by FangfossFlyer

Hi,

Slight thread diversion and I agree that pound for pound the Urika is a great value and sounds mighty fine - there is no two ways about it. In fact I would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a phono stage.

But for me the Superline further enhanced the music and engagement that I have been striving for and building towards over all these years.

Bringing the thread back on stream, the SL speaker also enhances that engagement and experience so that for me says it all.

But the acid  test is will I miss the SL speaker cable when I return them next week?

And then whether it is value for money for a 9m run.... on the face of it NO it isn't but there again I do run a Superline which compared to a Urika some people would say it is not value for money!

We will see,

All the best,

Richard

p.s. Hope to see you down town at The SORG sometime esp. as you are having  a Booplinth dem.
